"It's got to be rock and roll music...."

#1 "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes

It's at the beginning of the movie "Dirty Dancing" and they could have cut the rest of the movie and I would be happy. Besides Ronnie Bennett was ultimate to boot!

#2 "Johnny B Good" by Chuck Berry

This needs no statement.

#3 "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles

John Lennon (all of the Beatles I guess) took screaming to a plateau that will never be reached again.

#4 " Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett

The Wicked Pickett was pretty d**n good.

#5 "Gimme Some Lovin' " by The Spencer Davis Group.

Steve Winwood at 17 singing this NO WAY!!!! WAY!!!!!!!!

p.s. this is better thinking than car companies, economic implosion, and political polarization.

5 only... so I've kept it to this side of the pond. Do these count as Rock n Roll?

Brown Sugar ~ Rolling Stones

Reason: :food:

Gloria / Baby Please Don't Go ~ Van Morrison / Them

Reason: :ninja:

Maybe I'm Amazed ~ Faces

Reason: B)

All or Nothing ~ Small Faces

Reason:

For Your Love ~ Yardbirds

Reason: :notworthy:

Yes they do count and these were all fantastic groups.

Van Morrison's Astral Weeks is probably one of the top 10 lp's of all time.

BFG you would be the "first responder".

Posted

while these are all good songs they A:date you and B:are all pretty much from the same era how about 5 from each decade as good songs are still being released and you don't always hear them on the radio. I shall return this requires much contemplation

I slightly favor St. Dominic's over Astral Weeks, but they're both good albums.

I'll go with 'Jackie Wilson Said' from Van

Side two of Abbey Road (to me it's just one long song)

Art Blakey 'A Night in Tunisia' If that isn't rock n roll, I don't know what is.

Eddie Cochran 'Summertime Blues'

Sir Douglas Quintet 'She's About a Mover'

Well, that's right now. Ask me tomorrow or in 10 minutes and you'll get a different list. Heck, I didn't even get any Stax records on there.

gavo- I tried to get at least two decades in. Some of the early rock is academically interesting, but not something I would characterize as a favorite. Much of the recent music that passes as rock is, well, past me.

Wow! A new phrase is added to the Rock n Roll lexicon.

'it just makes me wanna dust my broom' – check

'it just makes me wanna walk the dog' – check

'it just makes me wanna ride my Goose' – hey hey mama, rocknroll

1927.jpg

I'm gonna write a little letter,

gonna mail it to my forum Admin.

Yeah an' it's a jumpin' little audio file

I want my forum jockey to play.

Roll Over Bendy, I gotta hear V-twin Termignoni today.

You know, the relay temperature's risin'

The Moto Guzzi's blowin' a fuse.

My crank's beatin' rhythm

and my airbox keeps a-singin' the blues.

Roll Over Bendy and tell Admin Jaap the news.

I got the rockin' tappets,

I need a shot of air cooled rhythm and blues.

I caught the rollin' shafties

sittin' down at a 1200 Sport review.

Roll Over Bendy the valves 'r' rockin' in two by two.

Well, if you feelin' like it

go get your V.11, then reel and rock it.

Roll it over and move on up just

a trifle further and reel and rock with it,

roll it over,

Roll Over Bendy, dig these big torque rhythm and blues.

Well, early in the mornin' I'm a-givin' you a warnin'

don't you step on my Tenni suede shoes.

Hey diddle diddle, I am setting the gaps to universal spec, call it a fiddle,

ain't got nothin' to lose.

Roll Over Bendy and tell Admin Jaap the news.

You know she wiggles like a glow worm,

dance like a spinnin' top.

She got a crazy Marzocchi,

Ya oughta see it reel and rock.

Long as she got high octane, the revin' music wont never stop.

Roll Over Bendy,

Roll Over Bendy,

Roll Over Bendy,

Roll Over Bendy,

Roll Over Bendy, dig these big twin rhythm and blues.

EDIT

I thought I better add that this is, of course, Chuck Berry's Roll over Beethoven – in case you young-uns don't know it.

5 ? David, this is IMPOSSIBLE.

So, as far as this evening goes:

"No Fun" by Iggy Pop.

Actually, just about anything he did as/with The Stooges. Plus his Berlin period with Bowie and Eno.

Cos it just vibrates of all the right elements found in rock music: sex, drugs and that unreal false sensation of immortality.

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=hmI9iCiH-SE

"Sunday Morning" by The Velvet Underground.

Arguably one of best rock band ever.

No especially this song, just anything from the Lou Reed era.

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=0cWzxJvgWc8

"Fight The Power" by Public Enemy.

The best rock song ever was probably written by a Hip Hop band.

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=8PaoLy7PHwk

"Creep" by Radiohead

A girl you can't get, some self underesteem and a guitar.

You will never have another better chance to write a rock song.

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=nxpblnsJEWM

"Into My Arms" by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

Cos when you found out that sex, drugs and that fake sense of immortality were just illusions, and that the only action you did get was by screwed politicians, you do need songs for your soul.

Nick Cave DOES have to be there, indeed.

Looking at the link – I've never seen those N.C. videos before. Great. As I sat Sadly By Her Side is on at the mo.

I could be here for some time...

Erm, different subject, but I hope that you're watching those old road race vids in the nearby thread?

agree on that, the digital age allows thousand of bands to exist (for a very short while, until they discover painfully they cannot go above the noise level caused by the zillions of bands outhere).

I couldn't help notice that in the '2000s bands named three bands who are blatantly copycats of the sixties/seventies (The Stripes, Wolf' and Amy, who's stuff i really like actually) and a band fronted by a producer who's solo records are terribly bad and unoriginal: sometimes a little change in the formula makes everything stick so much better :)

The Presets are great.
