Early 2003 had external pumps with later 2003 models having internal. Mine is a 2003 and it has an external pump.

Why?

Because the US always gets the "last year's models." Many, if not most of our 2003 models were what would be called 2002 models in the rest of the world. When looking up parts on the Guzzi diagrams, subtract one year if it's a US model.

For Europe I thought the switch was made for the 2003 models, but my 2002 parts manual shows internal fuel pump

If in the US, you are trying to determine if the 2003 model has internal or external I think you will have to physically look. Perhaps you also need to physically look at 2002 models???

I think safe assumptions are that 2004+ models V11 six speeds all had internal fuel pumps and 1999 through 2001 all had external fuel pumps. Of course, with all the modified Guzzis out there it is best to physically look before ordering the fuel pump.

the difference is easy, the external ones have a screwed on tank top arround the filler cap, the internal ones haven't that.

And a 75mm wide black foam pad from the front of the tank to the filler cap.

My 2003 in the US has the internal fuel pump. The unit is essentially an automotive fuel sending unit.
