Got worried that the spring might fail on my 02 LeMans so I purchased a new one from MG Parts and opened up the side cover. Once apart I noticed that the original spring was free and loose on the boss, great news. I measured the boss and it is 16mm in diameter. I measured the new spring and it has an ID of approximately 17mm, just like the original one. Lots of info on filing down the old boss or ordering a new one with the 15mm boss. Looks like Moto Guzzi or MG Parts has made sure the new spring fits a 15mm or a 16mm boss. Anyway thought I would toss this info out there. I believe in all the threads there may have been some mention of the larger ID spring, not sure. This is just what I found yesterday.

Now I feel comfortable riding the bike on long trips, at least the spring won't be a mental issue.

Thanks. Yes, it was noted at some point in the past threads that MG eventually changed the coil size of the spring, presumably to accommodate the bigger boss that somehow appeared for a while around 2002 and who knows, perhaps at other times since that.

Did you check spring wasn't binding or near binding at furthest extent of pawl arm travel?

My replacement spring had more clearance on the big boss than the stock spring would have had on a 15mm boss, so I left it alone. So far, so good...
