Karl Von Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 While at bike week in Daytona my brother snapped the pinion shaft in half on his V11 Roso Mandello. It snapped right were the splines start and the drive shaft coupler bolts to it. The u-joints seemed ok and it looked like nothing seized. One thing that we did noticed was the drive shaft seemed to pull-apart about 3/4 of a inch where the 2 sections slide in together. There were also 2 white marks on the shaft where they come together and they are now no lined up. Anyway does anyone know anybody who might have a rear drive unit for sale ? I checked Reboot and they are sold out. Also we went to the speedway for the manufactures show & test rides. Aprilia was there but no Guzzi. Go figure.

I believe he has one form his son's Ballabio. Number should be at the front of the MGNOC News. If not, I'll get it for you.
Greg Field Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Unbelievable. Automated censoring software changed the common nickname for guys named Richard into symbols. Let's try some other ones: shit piss female private part :-) @#!#$#
raz Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 We tried discussing FAG bearings on Wildguzzi or Guzzitech a while ago and that was not allowed either <_> This is @#$#! stupid

It will prevent big problems with premature wear and destructive vibration. The trunnion yokes on the shaft must be in the same plane, as shown here: BTW: Tell your brother that it's not exactly a kind thing to do burnouts and/or wheelies with a V11. There are far wor$e thing$ than $napping a pinion $haft that can (and do) happen whilst engaging in this kinda behavior.

The strange thing is my brother babied this bike and never abused it. I am sure he could not do a burn out or a wheelie if his life depended on it. He obsessive about that bike. He was sitting at a red light and went to leave when it snapped. I will know more once we get everything apart and see what is going on, I will also check the drive shaft to see if it was damaged.

Glad to know you found a replacement bevel drive, Karl. As you no doubt know by now, the gearsets are matched, and cannot be interchanged individually. Strange thing, the failure of the pinion shaft without ample "provocation". You have to suspect either a flaw in manufacture of the forging, or aforementioned abuse at the hand of a PO that weakened it into "pre-broken" condition. . .
Greg Field Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Yes, I'd very much like to see pictures, to note whether it's just a fracture, or if there is some twisting evident on the splines.
richard100t Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 The same exact thing happened to my RM. It sounds like the pinion snapped in the exact same place too. I, however was attempting to pull a wheelie when said pinion let go. Ever since then I've been a good little boy on the Rosso & never try anything too umm...strenuous

I will know when I get it all apart.
