I wouldn't bother buying Redline for the V11 engine in the UK.

It is very expensive here. It's no doubt relatively cheaper buying it in USA, plus their oils are different anyway (generally worse) hence the American recommendations for Redline.

As it happens, I did order some Redline for the gearbox yesterday, but only a small amount to see what it's like.

The rest of the big order that I made was for top quality European oil.

I think you'd be better doing that.

There is no shortage of high quality Euro oils and they'll probably all be better speced than most of the American oils. The European oils have different formulations and a lot retained higher levels of the protective elements that the Americans are referring to.

There is no need for hair pulling concern.

You'll not go wrong with most of what is available in the UK.

Look at the Opie site as someone said at the beginning, particularly as they have a sale on.

Good call on the oil, Tom.

Coupla Q's:

How far out o' spec were the ring end gaps, and is it consistent on all the rings?

How do the tappets and cam look?

Ring gap spec for the two top rings is .40 - .65mm. I checked the two top rings at 3 points in the cylinder and saw a worse case of .673mm at the top position, best case was .61 at the bottom of the right cyl. Both measured .64 in the middle of the cylinder. I didn't bother disassembling and checkling the oil ring.

Tappets and cam looked good except for a tiny pit on the face of both exhaust tappets. There's a pic of one of the tappets here:

I'm replacing the exhaust tappets while I'm in there.

This would be somewhat surprising to me also, even for "rough honed" nickasil bores. :huh2:

What kind of air filter?

What kind of air filter?

K&N installed by previous owner which I cleaned and oiled it every 4k miles. I'll probably be going back to a paper filter now.

Explanation acknowledged, as expected. -_-

Your plan makes good sense, my friend.

Mobil-1 makes so many different products, I would find it hard to generalize. Last trip to the store I found three different 10w-30 Mobil-1 products.

The only Mobil-1 I would consider for the Guzzi is the Turbo Diesel Truck product with the API service rating CI-4 as this reflects the higher ZDDP content.

Of course, I like this New Belgium black ale, too, and that's not to just everyone's liking . . . :bier:

And, hey, here's an amazingly detailed and researched article on oils in flat tappet situations:
