gstallons Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Anyone have a starter solenoid laying around ? Getting tired of jumping the starter on this road trip in Charlotte NC. maybe someone has a cross reference # for one at the auto parts store .... lemme know Andy Exactly which terminals are you shorting? The two large or one small to one large. If it is the two large, the solenoid is bad. If it is the one small to one large, the problem is in the start circuit.
emry Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 If it is the secondary of the solenoid on the starter, disassembly and a good scuff with some sandpaper or such of the main contacts will normally allow a good contact for starting. As noted above if your problem is the primary windings or other starter activation circuits you are in for a little more work.
Kiwi_Roy Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 There's not much to the starter circuit. If you're not sure what it is here's the diagram. Start Button, Clutch Switch, Relay2 coil Guzzy_Wiring May 16 2010.pdf
andy york Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 Well I must have other problems....Shorting the big and small terminal....something wrong in the start circuit somewhere.... i guess its off with the tank so we can have a better look at the situation under there. more to follow.. andy

If I were to hazard a guess I would look at the switch on clutch lever, try shorting that out and press start, don't forget the kill switch. Roy
gstallons Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Well I must have other problems....Shorting the big and small terminal....something wrong in the start circuit somewhere.... i guess its off with the tank so we can have a better look at the situation under there. more to follow.. andy Jumper the start terminal (small) to the larger terminal (the one with the battery cable) and see what happens. p.s. Make absolutely sure the bike is in neutral. We will all hear you if it isn't.
andy york Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 Well after arriving home it was pull the tank time. <_>After disassembly of the starter/kill switch.....nothing at fault. check fuses again....15 amp blown...replace....turn on key ....pop!!! replace fuse again....unplug socket to starter switch...key on ...pop it was time to step away....thinking there is a dead short in the harness somewhere....i was about to say screw it ..i'll keep jumping it. pull all the relays....replace fuse...key on...no blown fuse.. start putting relays back in one at a time.....pop...fuse blows again... Bad relay was the cause of all this. guess its time for more relays from Dan. I think i get about 4 sets of tires to a set of relays andy
andy york Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 I had whatever was the latest greatest dont want to go back out there yet .....you know... mojo and all seems to run now 75,000 guess i'll change my relays once a year. I seem to change them every 16 months cause i have to. i think that will just be part of my yearly maint. andy
emry Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Only a Guzzi would have replacing relays as part of its regular maintence. Too funny. Glad you got it sorted.
Kiwi_Roy Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 start putting relays back in one at a time.....pop...fuse blows again... Bad relay was the cause of all this. Was it Relay 1 or 2 causing the fuse to pop? It would take a major melt down for a short between 30/87A to ground perhaps between the center and adjacent small pin. If you get a chance please run your multimeter over it and possibly remove the cover. Heres one source I use http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=Z2247-ND $4.82 They also have another part o Z2001-ND @ $7.60, don't know that it would last any longer though Roy p.s. I keep telling you guys to substitute a lamp for the fuse when locating a short, but I'm just as guilty one more fuse will fix it!
andy york Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 actually, I think it was the fuel pump relay....no ...I relay don't know. The 15 amp that blew was the fuel pump fuse of which I think the starter button goes to also probably wrong about that to. I've thought about being methodical in my electric search but in the end, screw it the bike is running. I think these bikes have a lot of vibration that causes the contacts in these relays to bounce around between open and closed. I know its not supposed to be that way but what else can account for the contacts looking burned. I've seen ignition points with 25-30000 miles on them that looked better than some of these relay contacts. anyway...yearly relay replacement has been added to my maintenance list....kinda cheap insurance since this only happens to me when I'm 500 miles from home later andy
