OK ...the special smoke crap is driving me crazy.

After swapping all the relays yesterday and thinking all is well...

after about 50 miles today, I running 90 on the freeway and had a couple of stumbles.

then about 30 seconds later I'm fighting to get to the shoulder.

pull the seat....hand on fuel pump...turn key ...nothing. :glare:

swap 2 relays ...nothing. all fuses good.

long story short... 2 "bad relays".

took one and cut it open....appears to be fine...installed it in fuel pump

position....turn on key...little contact gets pulled to other contact like I think

it should but no fuel pump... <_>

What else is there about a relay to go bad? when I first pulled the relay it felt a bit

warm....I guess I could be getting to much voltage.anyplace I should check other

than at the battery?

When the sweat dries, I'll cut open a good one just cause I can.

Then I'll find my multimeter and try to get some readings

have fun out there

Check the socket, if the contacts loose will heat the relay

Pump current x resistance = heat

upon further examination, all of the 16 or17 relays I have laying around

will work in the headlight but not run the fuel pump.

I admit being better at mechanical but this electrical is driving me nuts.

upon further examination, the 5 amp fuse was blown #1.

evidently it supplies some sort of control voltage to the relay.

my assumption that a relay is good if used in the headlight circuit.

most of the relays would operate the headlight so why would the fuel

pump not work.

hot wired the fuel pump....it is OK....cut open a good relay and installed

it at fuel pump location....turn key on....relay energizes but no fuel pump.

check fuses again....this time #1 5 amp blown. replace fuse...fuel pump

works now.

time for bed....will try and see if relay gets hot tomorrow..:glare:

I need a whiskey:drink:

When you hot wired the pump, did you do that in the relay socket or directly to the pump?

hot wired the pump direct

hot wired the pump direct

Just for the record, try doing it in the relay socket. It should go like this:

| | |

__	<- jump this one

__	<- with this one

If that makes the pump run, but an activated relay doesn't... well, then some things are not what they seem.

Note: You are also jumpering the supply to coils and injectors, all fed from Relay 5
