belfastguzzi Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I'm thinking of taking the Griso for a track day tryout this year. I've never ever been on the track before. I'm thinking that I've left it too late, like 25 - 30 years too late. Is there room for a granda on the track? Can the Griso shovel up some fun and come out unscathed? 2011 could be the year to find out. So what will I have to do? First job is to get the wooden Griso brakes sharpened up. Hopefully good pads will do that. I'll be keeping the Pirelli Angel sport touring tyres on, though come to think of it, they've had a couple of puncture repairs. Is that a concern for track abuse?
raz Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Go for it! I attended a one day CSS course a couple years ago. People were everything between 20 and 60+ years old and riding all sorts of bikes. We were divided into groups by experience (you start on level 1 no matter your experience outside of CSS) and subgroups by "slow or fast" (which you decide yourself). There were everything between Yamaha R6's and Cruisers with leather bags that scraped the ground immediately in any curve and any speed. Damn good day it was, well worth every penny. To sum it up, I think your only concern is that tyre. I would probably replace it.
Baldini Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 It's never too late! Will it be in NI? Dunno about over there, but here trackdays vary by promoter - some more novice friendly than others. Bike club days, & novice only days might be of interest but from what I've seen of your riding you'd do fine on an average trackday. They usually have slow/intermediate/fast groups & you can usually move on the day if it doesn't suit. Just ride at your own pace, concentrate on what you are doing, look where you're going not what's going on behind you & don't get sucked into anything by other riders - you'll almost certainly find a few riding similar pace to your own. With bike; so long as it's all serviced & working, tape up lights, tape/remove reg plate, remove mirrors(distraction - concentrate where you're going, let those behind look after themselves), sort ground clearance (if you drag anything on the road, you'll drag it more on the track). Personally I think the grippier the tyres the better, but modern sports touring tyres are fine so long as you allow for them & they will progressively lose grip on the limit rather than letting go without warning (I don't know the Angels - but IME Pirellis have always been OK for that). I dunno about repaired tyres. You'll need one or zip up two piece leathers, road licence, etc. but check specific regs. Trackdays are a buzz. KB
Guzzirider Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Your sport touring tyres should be fine I reckon. How about the new Anglesey circuit which is only 20 miutes from the Dublin ferry at Holyhead? If you are talking after July I'd be happy to join you because I am yet to take the cafe racer on track and it needs a good thrashing. Maybe Keith can join us and show us how its done! http://www.angleseycircuit.com/

Possibly March. If the bike stays upright, then your notion of an Anglesey meet would be attractive. July would be the best time for me. Soon after that, I am due to become a grandfather (oldest boy) and then the father of the bride (oldest girl). Has anyone tried Metzler Racetecs? Someone is selling a new pair for £125, K0 and K1 compounds.
gavo Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Go for the track day its the most fun you can have with your pants on
