rossi46 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hi I'm bracing my self for my first oil change, what tool do I need to remove the manhole cover on the sump(what size)27mm? and which is the drain plug at rear of sump? cheers
Admin Jaap Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I would take off the entire sump. Removing the oil filter throught the man hole can be quite a pain. Don't forget the two bolts in the middle!
Kiwi_Roy Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Hi I'm bracing my self for my first oil change, what tool do I need to remove the manhole cover on the sump(what size)27mm? and which is the drain plug at rear of sump? cheers When I got my bike the tool kit came with a large nut, I couldn't figure out what it was for then one day it dawned on me it fits into the sump cover so you can grip it with regular wrench. After reading through the posts I elected to remove the sump, much easier to remove the filter that way and only takes a few minutes. You might find the filter has a hose clamp fitted for security in which case it would be impossible to remove through the cover plate. You need to remove the hose that attaches at the rear although I think some leave it in place. Have a new gasket on hand but don't replace the old one unless it tears. Good Luck Roy Jaap beat me to it, that's the sort of good advice I listened to Update. I found this pretty good description of the task. note the oil filter hose clamp http://motoguzzimaintenance.wetpaint.com/page/Moto+Guzzi+Metal+Stone+Oil+Change
Guzzirider Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 When I did the first oil change on Helen's V11 after buying it second hand, I dropped the whole sump (only takes an extra couple of mins)and found some curly swarf which had presumably lived there from new because only the manhole had been removed in previous services. Make sure the new filter is nice and tight! Guy
rossi46 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 thanks guys I was intending to drop the sump but figured that (considering where the drain plug is located!) there would be some oil left in the pan and it could get messy!
Baldini Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 ...there would be some oil left in the pan ... All the more reason to drop the sump! You can have a look see & clean up inside. Just make sure you've gasket(s) handy. I always drop the sump for a filter change. I've never used the manhole cover, it doesn't look any way to do the job, to me. Filters can sometimes be very tight on & I've resorted to screwdrivers thru the side of them in the past. KB
