Coully Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Hi, would appreciate some advice. I am a recent moto guzzi owner having picked up a 2003 v11 le mans with only 6k miles on the clock. The one issue I have is that there seems to be a bolt missing that holds the side stand onto the engine casing. The main large bolt is there ok but looks like there should be a second that goes through a hole next tot the side stand switch and then looks like there would be a spacer and then an M8 sized thread in the engine casing just above the sump line. I tried an m8 bolt but it is too big to go through the hole in the side stand bracket as it looks like it around 6 mm wide??? The m8 bolt locates into the engine casing threads ok though. I can't work out what type of fastener guzzi has used here. It looks like something that must be 6mm at one end and 8mm at the other? Very strange. Anyone got a picture of what their side stand mount looks like please?
stormsedge Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 A quick run to the garage -- you are correct. One large bolt to crankcase holding sidestand...one smaller bolt holding the stand sensor. Do not have a picture, but the MG workshop manual has these words: "Stand Removal. Remove the stand sensor "A" by unscrewing screw "B"...Remove the side stand by unscrewing screw "C" fastening it to the crankcase." Reassembly the reverse. Make sure you have that baby on a stand before loosing that bolt. Hope this helps. k
Tom M Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I believe the smaller screw is an M6 that passes through the sidestand and a spacer before screwing into the case. Here's a diagram from the parts manual that should help. Unfortunately I can't tell you the length of the M6 screw or the thickness of the spacer but you should be able to work it out. More than a few people here have reported stripping the M6 threads in the case so don't be surprised if you need to install a helicoil there.
stormsedge Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Yup. The 6mm goes through the mounting plate for the sensor. Funny, on the diagram that Tom supplied (which is the correct diagram by the way-no dispute), the large bolt is shown going to one of the 6mm holes on the side of the crankcase vice the large hole forward and up fm there that it actually goes into...the hole indicated on the diagram is normally inhabited by mud packing insects on my bike. k
Coully Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. It does indeed look like the threads are well stripped for that m6 bolt, to the extent that the hole is about 8mm now!!!! I will try a helical. There was one there before judging by the bits left over and it looks like it has just slipped out over time as well. Helical and some loctite perhaps?
