The idea was to investigate the common lore (I would say "myth") that the valves have to be "stone cold" to adjust, hence the infrared temperature reader and the stone. More on that here:

You are correct! I forgot to take into consideration the mechanical wear. That should come to play too....

Reminds me of this girl I dated in college that was kind of a walking, talking feeler gauge.

Be sure to lube the  tip, feeler, and arm before you feel 'er gauge.
