I was about to despair as i have had the Griso for a week and had NO problems at all :)

 

I'm getting a crazy fuel consumption on the dashboard ! I do about 100 km and the reserve lamp goes on: the computer says 12,9 km per 100 km !

My riding isn't especially fast nor inadequate but I'm amazed (and slightly worried) that the bike drinks up so much.

 

What could it be ? The bike runs really smooth, there aren't any weak zones or burning fuel noises when cutting off...What can make a bike drinks so much ?

 

(conditions: 20 kms on the motorway and 80 kms in town)

Well, obviously *something* is wrong. Most people have been reporting somewhere between 35 and 42 mpg US. My son's 8 valve gets high 30s to low 40s..

Any error codes showing up? Most particularly O2 sensor or engine/air temp sensors. They do tend to be a bit thirsty when new but those figures are way too high.

 

Brakes aren't binding are they?

JM there are lots of posts around the place,including here, about the 8V Griso's thirst. Over the years since having mine, the fuel consumption readout has displayed mid to high 20s and into low 30s in good conditions. Of course it's got that messy open pipe, but still, the motor is just thirsty and that's that. Those figures are mpg and the dash only deals in USA gallons. You need to convert that to euro speak in order to compare, but yours does seem worse. In decent conditions I reckon on having a range of around 120 miles. Fuel light comes on between around 95 miles to 110. Yours is coming on after 100km which is 62 miles. I think it's 15 litres from 'reserve' to brim-full: you say 14L. Are you getting a complete fill? Maybe the sender is registering too early?

 

Actually your readout is equivalent of 18 mpg US, is that right? That's pretty grim. I have seen lots of low 20s, but it's not always as bad as that and it did get somewhat better after I did a thorough tune-up. If my display shows average 28mpg that is 33mpg in UK terms. Not good, but 35ish is what I'm resigned to as a good average. Yours is a lot worse. Give it a bit longer, more tank-fills, in case that's a rogue stat.

I'll say again.. that's ridiculously low mileage. Something's wrong. If I wasn't getting mid 30s in your conditions I'd be finding out why..

Remember that to tune it properly you have to be able to re-ret the TPS so you need ducatidiag, vdsts or one of the other scan tools.

 

First do your valve lash and oils. Then start the motor and get it to over 60*C. Attach the Throttlebody balance tool you're using and close both the air bleeds, (Note only one of them should be open but usually both are ex-factory). Hold the engine speed at about 3,700-4,000 rpm. Ballance the TB's using the screw on the bell crank underneath the LH throttle body under no circumstances mess with the throttle stop screw. Kill the engine with the kill switch and re-set the TPS. Fire it up again and let it idle and open the air bleed on the side with the highest manifold depression until both TB's are in balance.

 

Job done, its that easy, but you MUST have a way of re-setting the TPS.
