If there`s a pad on top of the tank, it`s not the in-tank filter, and it`s a pre-2003 right? And My 2005 had the broken spring too.

This is true. Also, external fuel pump which could be mounted in various locations.

 Have the 02 also and no peeling paint on the motor Mr Jaap though the pawl spring did break last summer and is still waiting to be fixed but with three other bikes thats not a problem and anyway up to my neck in snow here in Canada so no rush "A",and at the start of this topic that has to be an 02 for sure and the colour is called Champagne Silver i believe.

 You could do away with the original spring and modify it where a pull type spring holds the pawl up against the drum. There is an article somewhere in here (this site) showing the mod.
