Guest gavin Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 Has anybody any experience of instrument failures? My rev counter began to flicker, then waver, then jump until finally it used to suddenly swing off the scale and then back to normal. Then DEAD, completely deceased and past it!!!! A new one here in the UK is £160 so if it was'nt covered under warranty I'd have been a bit pissed by it - anybody ever repaired one? The second thing is my speedo - now bear with me on this as I know it sounds rubbish, but I'm not an idiot (well maybe a bit!!!) and this really is true - I'm the guy who had the entire engine replaced under warranty (not the gearbox though) and when the bike was returned the speedo reads about 40% less. I have spoken to the guy who actually fitted the new engine and he has convinced me that they never replaced the speedo drive (why would they anyway?) and checking with a Guzzi specialist there is not an alternative drive made. The distance counter has also reduced by 40%. Is it mechanical or does the cable step the counter electronicly? Does any other market have a different speedo fitted? - Mine is a white faced Veglia with KPH as the predominent scale with a max of 240. The distance is in Kilometers as well. Does anybody have a theory? (The unit actually works fine) Although the engine was changed without any problem at a list cost of £5500 - its a single part number for the entire engine unit- they are refusing to change the speedo as it does actually work. I've fitted a Sigma motorcycle digital speedo, its really good with all the functions including a clock and it sits neatly on the laft bar under the clutch resevoir. The bike is still brilliant despite all the niggles - character rules ok!!!!! Gavin
TX REDNECK (R.I.P.) Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 Gavin my tach died at about 3500 miles. It was replaced under warranty. My dealer has had to replace several of them on various models. As for the speedometer I do know that he ordered a Stone for a customer and when it arrived it was a Canadian model with the speedo in kilometers/ with no apparent difference in it and the U.S. model other than the speedo and EPA stickers. He had MGNA pick it up and return with a U.S. spec model.I believe i read in Guzziology about different speedometer drives. However if your's is off by that much i would think that be a warranty issue.Look at this way your bike stays in warranty that much longer.
callison Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 Well, something isn't right. The Speedometer and odometer have to meet certain accuracy standards by law, so if it's out 40%, by definition, it isn't working and should be replaced under warrantee.
Guest v11eric Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 Gavin, Is youre voltageregulator still ok?? A bit wrong one like's killing instuments first for causing real trouble. tell us what you'll find Eric 01 v11lemans
TX REDNECK (R.I.P.) Posted September 7, 2002 Posted September 7, 2002 The bottom line is that Veglia instruments are junk.My dealer has replaced 12 tachs this year.I know one person who has had 3 speedometers on his Bassa. I'm a member of a British motorcycle group and the later model Meriden Triumphs had veglia instruments ,also crap. The only reliable fix has been to send them to Palo Alto for repair .Why do you think they call them vague'ly.
al_roethlisberger Posted September 9, 2002 Posted September 9, 2002 Who fixes them in Palo Alto.... CA?? ...which BTW is about 15 miles from my house al
TX REDNECK (R.I.P.) Posted September 9, 2002 Posted September 9, 2002 Al go to http://www.paspeedo.com/
jsciullo Posted September 15, 2002 Posted September 15, 2002 Gavin, I had mine replaced a 461 miles under warranty and at over 10k miles no more problems. Jim
