dangerous Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Ummmm, Im thinking not so good what do you guys reckon? V11 cafe sport was brought with new cam amongest other things... the exhaust valves recently burnt out and were replaced 1000k on and a exhaust tappit clearance went from .015 to 3mm re adjusted it and is now after 400km loose as hell again... What do you think the corse could be??? starts with C ends with M and has a A in the middle?
luhbo Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Rather the part similar to puppet, hanging to it. Open it quick, maybe you can still safe your new cam, at least it may still be regrindable. Hubert
Baldini Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 As Hubert is (I think?) suggesting: first check cam followers (tappets) - were they replaced when cam was replaced? Dunno about V11, but I've replaced a few worn followers on older motors.
Lucky Phil Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Ummmm, Im thinking not so good what do you guys reckon? What do you think the corse could be??? starts with C ends with M and has a A in the middle? So it went from .015mm which is way to tight to 3.0mm,is that right? Any valve that picks up nearly 3mm of clearance in 1000klms has obviously got major issues most likely a wiped out lifter and cam lobe. Why on earth would you even bother to adjust it. it needs the head pulled off and the lifters inspected for damage. Ciao
dangerous Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 .015 my be in not mm then either way .015 is the correct gap, iirc some us specs recomend larger. this is not my bike... adjusted it because the bike needed to be moved and as the valves had just been replaced it 'may' have been a settle in thing be it somewhat excisive... the bike was brought with having the cam just replaced so you would think it was not a issue. Thinking the 1st cam went due to oil feed failer, could this have happened again? Thinking perhaps bad luck and this bike has had two failed cams due to failed hardening?
Baldini Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Cause of cam failure was found & rectified? IME the followers will give up before the cam, but whatever... as said above, someone will have to look & see. Followers live under the barrels & should lift out. No issue with rocker assembly, pushrod, valve? Any metal in sump?
luhbo Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Check the tappets. As mentioned before somewhere, there is no lubrication failure to be expected 'cause the lobes and followers are splash lubed. Otherwise you'll find major damage on other parts, too. BTW, ccheck the pushrod first. Sometimes you can have lucky days, too, on a Guzzi 2.edit: Baldini was first I see just now ...
dangerous Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 interesting ta... had to replace a cam on a Honda CX500 as the oil pump failed at idle, it relyed on the oil pressure, this will delete this cause then. What would you expect to find if a push rod issue?
luhbo Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 One of the ends comes loose and then folds up the aluminium tube.
