sp838
anyone done it? I am replacing the tank on my '01 with a later model, internal pump tank. was thinking it would be nice to get rid of all those lines while I was at it. I was thinking I could just run a shorter hose backwards with a little filter on the end of it. If anyone has some experience doing this, please let me know. Thanks as always! GuzziMoto
I assume your system is the sames as what is on mine. The crankcase breather system Guzzi uses on the V11's works pretty well. The crank breather vents to the front section of the spine, where the oil is separated out. The oil then drains back into the sump while the air is vented to the air box. If you want to replace the section that vents to the air box and just have it vent through filters to the atmosphere that is fine. But if you get rid of the rest you may find that it blows a little oil and you may want to engineer some other form of oil containment. I personally would not remove the first part of the system. I tried that on a Daytona (basically the same system) and the results were not good. It spit too much oil. The stock system works really well and returns the oil back to the sump. The only thing I would consider doing is changing the last part where it vents to the air box. I don't think it really matters, I don't think changing it from venting to the air box to venting straight to the atmosphere is going to make any sort of improvement. But if you want to change any part of the stock system that is the part to change. There is only a line from the cases to the front section of the spine frame, a line from the top of the spine frame that tees and goes to the air box, and a return from the middle of the spine frame back down to the sump. Kiwi_Roy
When I took the airbox off mine I ran that hose down below the gearbox and finished it off with a K&N crankcase breather filter. The return from spine to sump remains. Even the old loops have a tank on the crankcase vent with a line back to the sump, it dips in below the surface to form a liquid seal. sp838
How much oil does it kick out? Yes, I wanted to get rid of all the lines, the big crank breather hose itself, as well as the return line. I have already removed the airbox and fitted a filter to the end of the little vent hose. Works fine. But I'd like to get rid of all of them. I won't do it if it will comprise the running of the engine, or if it will be spewing oil all over the bike, but if it's a small amount, then I'd be fine with changing the filter and topping off the oil every X amount of miles... GuzziMoto
I don't know how much oil yours will spit, or whether or not that will be too much for you. I know that mine spit too much oil for me and I went back to stock. A quick and easy check to see how much oil is going out your breather would be to replace the return line to the sump with a length of clear tube that is capped off, much like many motorcycles have as the drain from the airbox. I can't see it hurting the running of the motor, but it can make a mess and if it gets on your rear tire.....
fotoguzzi
the spine frame breather is a perfect system.. don't mess with something Guzzi got right.
Kiwi_Roy
The filter on mine gets dirty but I doubt it drips, as foto says, "don't mess with something Guzzi got right"
GuzziMoto
The filter on mine gets dirty but I doubt it drips, as foto says, "don't mess with something Guzzi got right" Did you delete the whole system or only the connection between the spine and the air box. If you keep the part of the system that uses the spine to separate oil out you should not have any issues. If you get rid of the whole system and only have it vent to atmo you may have issues with the oil mist that is in the air it is venting. I am in the "Don't mess with it. It is one of the few things Guzzi got right" camp. But I am there only after messing with mine and finding out just how well it really works. Kiwi_Roy
Only between spine and air box, The spine drain is still to the sump.
GuzziMoto
Only between spine and air box, The spine drain is still to the sump. Then you would not have any excess oil dripping out your breather. It should only be a potential issue if you remove the part of the system that separates oil out of the air. sp838
Thanks guys. Gonna take your advice and keep the system as is for now, it's really mostly a cosmetic issue. My filter on the line coming out of the top of the spine is clean, so nothing seems to be wrong with the way it's working. The hoses are annoying but the system works, so until I come up with some genius idea, it will stay...
docc
These big donks pump a lot of oil into vapor, more in the rain and more with mineral oil. Synth oils have minimal evaporation.
sp838
I do use Amsoil and almost never ride in the rain, at least not intentionally...
GuzziMoto
I use Amsoil as well. I also hate riding in the rain but around here it does happen. As I mentioned, if you want to see how much oil it separates out of the air just temporarily replace the return back to the sump with a clear piece of hose that is capped off at the bottom. I know mine pumps a fair bit out and that is with Amsoil.
