onraad
Hi everybody Today I noticed my headlight didn't work. When I got off the bike, I saw that neither my taillight nor my brake light is working. Checked the fuses under the seat: all ok. Lightbulb in the tail: ok. Relays: they're all the same so I've swaped places several times: everything else seems to be ok so I guess the relays are ok too. What could it be then? Any thoughts? Btw: it's a 2001 V11 Sport. Kind regards! Arno
docc
Possibly more than one problem at the same time. Be certain the headlamp bulb is good, both filaments. The tail lamp is susceptible to the contacts deep in the fixture weakening and not contacting the bulb base well. You can bend them outward and shape them to make a solid contact with the bulb base. Check also for 1) tach works? 2) tach and speedo have illumination? 3) warning lights between the tach and speedo all come on? 4) small low-watt "city light" in the headamp shell is lit? 5) tag light is lit? onraad
Ok thank you. I'll check the bulbs tomorrow or thursday and report back here. 1) tach works 2) illumination doesn't work. Tach wasn't lit when I bought the bike, speedo failed a couple of days ago (I thought it was just the bulb so planned to replace it during next service. 3) waening lights works except for the side stand indicator 4) city lights don't work either 5) tag light neither
docc
Does the horn blow?
Kiwi_Roy
Check for a broken wire behind the ignition switch Do you have a 5 pin relay in spot 1 (start relay position) it is the only one that must have a 5 pin. Fuse 6 & & should be alive with the key ON Don't go anywhere until you have it sorted, the chances are the bike is not charging either. Oh, I just noticed you are in Belgium, the wiring may be a little different over there.
onraad
All relays are 5-pin here. Don't know if that is origional in Belgium, I'll check it later this week. Horn works just fine.
onraad
Update:little morning test. Tach's dead too. Bike did run for few minutes and then suddenly lost all power. Won't start now. I only hear the relays clicking. Battery seams dead now. Could it be the power regulator? I measured 19V charging at 6000 rpm. Way too much no? Perhaps this leads to a failing battery which causes everything else to fail?
docc
I would start with a fresh battery or attempt to recondition yours. Yeah, anything over 14.2 is probably too high.
Gottagetone
Make sure your battery leads are tight. I had a similar problem and it was a simple tightening of the leads.
onraad
Did an overnight full recharge of the battery. Bike fired right up without any problems. Still no head-, tail- and brakelights though... Tach seems to work again. Dashlights are out.
Gottagetone
Might be time for some new relays.
onraad
And then which ones would I need? Now they are all five pin pieces. All the same. But that seems incorrect. I cannot find the right ones in the workshop manual.
Gottagetone
I found this which may help you run down the bad relays if that is the case: http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17317&hl=%2Brelay+%2Blist&do=findComment&comment=185213
docc
Only the front/Starter Relay requires 5-pins, but they will seat in all the positions and be available to move around if necessary. I remain a devoted OMRON fan. Do the turn indicators work? (I'm thinking like Kiwi_Roy in post#5, test for power at Fuse 6 - if none, inspect the inside of the ignition switch.) onraad
Turn indicators and warning lights are always working. I'll check for a broken wire at the ignition. Still I think it's strange. If I put in a fully charged battery (reads 12,8V): the bike fires up and runs for about 15 to 20 minutes. Lights stay dead. After some driving, the tach dies and little later the bike comes to a stop. Battery indicates something like 11,5V now. Battery is new (2 months), fuses are ok and so far I assume relays are good too since, when swapped and the battery is good) they all fit to act as start relay. So, I'll order a new regulator (since it charges at 19V) and check the wires at the ignition. Any other ideas are welcome. How should I test the ignition? Just wiggle all wires and check for loose ones?
