danl Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Going from cranking to absolutely nothing one moment to the next is really odd. Looking at Carl Allison's diagram for the '99 (not sure how your bike differs) it looks like a blown ignition switch fuse would cause the symptoms you are seeing in an instant fashion. I know you said you checked all the fuses, but sometimes they can fail without being really obvious visually. If you only visually inspected the fuses its worth checking the voltage at both sides of the fuse at the exposed pads on top while installed. The ignition switch fuse should be powered at all times.

That is also the classic symptom of Lead Oxide on the terminals, its a hard insulating layer that creeps in under the lugs making the contact area smaller and smaller until it finally fuses leaving the battery completely disconnected even though the terminals are tight. If you scrape the posts apply a little Petroleum Jelly aka Vaseline then connect the lugs the Vaseline prevents the Oxygen from getting at the lead so it doesn't oxidize. You don't need to apply Vaseline every time, it stays on the terminals for several disconnections. You are right, the Start fuse will cause the same symptoms BTW the bike puts 40+ Amps through the 15 Amp fuse for a split second, if the main cable to the starter is not connected (loose or Oxidized) the 40+ Amps continues until the fuse blows in about 1 second. SORTED! guys I really appreciate all the attention. It was a dead gel battery. The battery provides 12.7V at rest and my battery tender does not find any fault with it but throw ANY draw on it and volts go to ZERO! I've now learned that even with a booster pack a dead gel battery will suck so much amperage that there will be effectively NO VOLTAGE. So my test was to pull the battery leads and clamp my booster directly to them with the battery out of the loop. Bingo! My goose is revived. Yes I feel like a fool, I stripped back all connectors, took all switches apart and cleaned and checked all solders. . . hours of nerve wracking tedious efforts and it was just a battery. I am just thankful I didn't break any fragile plastic bits and hey now everything is cleaned and lubed. So kinda win win??? --Ian BTW thansk for all the wiringin diagrams and relay info. I've printed it off in the event of future issues. Frankly I think this is my all time favorite bike and will ride it until they pry me off motorcycles all together! 1
docc Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Don't feel bad about being tricked by a battery that shows perfect voltage then drops out when it's needed. In the meantime, you've done some fine fettling and that always adds up to a better bike! 1
