VINnumber and chassis changes

Is their an possibility to match the VIN number to the change of the chassis (longer) or other changes ? Or to the year of building ? I love to by a Lemans.

Is it the 8th character is R for the early frames and S for the later?  In that case, all LeMans would be S?
