al_roethlisberger Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 I have an Ohlins 46 HRCS rear shock on my V11 Lemans, that unbelievably is now approaching 20 years old..... not sure how time flies that quickly, but alas it does I just noticed this weekend that undoubtedly due to age the "white" bump stop inside the spring has turned to some sort of gooey clay that disintegrated when I hit with the water hose... and there's nothing really left So two questions, well maybe four: 1) A quick Google turns up lots of replacement Ohlins bump stops for rear shocks, but I'm not sure which one is appropriate. Any idea? 2) Is partially disassembling the end of the shock to replace the bump stop a DIY task, or do I have to send it to someone to rebuild? 2a) If DIY, any video, photos, or instructions on how to remove and reassemble the end of the shock to replace the bump stop? 2b) If it needs professional help, any recommended shops in the USA I should contact? I'm pretty handy with a wrench, so DIY is not a problem as long as I have some instructions and specifications to follow, oh and the correct part. But I also am a practical guy, so if a shop will replace it and give the shock a good once-over for "$100" ... then that may be a better use of my time, and peace of mind. Whichever makes more sense.

Not an easy job I'm afraid. I recently replaced the rear eye end on the Ohlins shock ( TTX race shock) on my 1198 as I fitted a flat rear link which required a shorter eye end. To replace the bump stop you will need to remove the spring then the eye end or completely disassemble the rear shock and remove the piston from the shaft and fit it that way. I can tell you that to remove the eye end you will need a shock shaft clamp which isnt that hard to make. Biggest issue is though that sometimes you need to actually put this in an hydraulic press to hold the shaft while you apply a lot of heat to the eye end to break the thread locker. You will probably need to remove the eye end bearing so its not heat damaged to do this. So best case scenario is make a shaft clamp, remove the spring with a spring compressor, remove the eye end bearing ( pressed in) clamp up the shaft in a vice with the shaft clamp fitted and use a propane torch to heat the eye end while you try to unscrew it. Re fitting is easy. New bump stop, fit the eye end with a new bearing ( you may as well) refit the eye end, with thread locker and refit the spring. The easy way.......take it to an Ohlins specialist and he should have it done in 30 min max. Cost me $60 to get done and he did it while I went and had a coffee. This specialist was a national superbike race team that ran Ohlins suspension and the mechanic told me about the eye end removal difficulty and the sometime requirement for the shaft clamp to need to be in the press. Not common knowledge even for shock specialists. Dan Kyle the US Ohlins dealer I bought the shock off also recommended using plenty of heat for the eye end removal. If you take it to the suspension specialist it may be worth mentioning this technique just in case they run into issues. Ciao
LowRyter Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Don in OKC is an Ohlins trained guy if you can't find anyone local. http://www.motivcycleworks.com/
al_roethlisberger Posted June 6, 2019 Author Posted June 6, 2019 Thanks for the quick feedback. It sounds like the best option is probably having a professional do the work. I've dropped Motiv an email.

al_roethlisberger Posted June 7, 2019 Author Posted June 7, 2019 Thanks Andy, that would be mighty convenient given my location!
GuzziMoto Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 I have had great results with the Ohlins shop down in NC. It used to be run by Stig Petterson, I assume he is still the guy. Stig was great, he did the front forks in my Daytona (GSXR forks converted to fit a Daytona). 1

At that point he had "retired" and was running his own business out of his garage. Got me a great deal on the cartridges and did the installation. Great guy, soft spoken, knows his stuff. 1

I did a quick Google with no helpful results, although I did find a Facebook profile that looks to be him. I'll try that too although the profile seems to be dormant since around 2015.
andy york Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I can't seem to find the exact person. Fastbike is in Hendersonville and it sounds very familiar. It appears the young man I was referring to may have had to move into a real shop. In looking at the info...it doesn't give enough info for me to determine who it is. I thought I posted something on here about my experience with them....i will try searching for it andy 1
andy york Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I just went through 40 pages of "stuff" and could not find anything that I might have posted. I know i talked with someone about it after I got my stuff back. Guy did the forks, rear shock, and steering damper. I will give Fastbike a call Mon. and see if thats them. I need to find out anyway cause its been to long since I had it done. I used to be able to do it myself...but all the factory tools I had are gone. later andy 1
