cash1000 Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 I've got 3 bolts in tappitt covers on my RM that the threads are stripping out. As these bolts are being taken out each time I do valve clearances I'm thinking a Time-sert thread repair is the way to go rather than helli coil as they are stronger. What size do I need?

MartyNZ Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 I have a box of helicoils to do the job if you are stuck. Not as good as Timesert, but still work ok. And you can have them NOW if that is important.

Best price I've got is $220 for kit. That's from Wurth with works discount. Rep trying to get me a better price (Fellow motorcyclist) Will be worth it if I have to end up replacing all 16 threads!

Rolf Halvorsen Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 Correct assembled Helicoil thread is the simplest and best way. When you insert it deep enough, it will prevent to be unscrewed. The top surface will not be changed.

docc Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Seems the sump fasteners are the same M6x1.0 as the valve covers. One of my fourteen pulled its threads out. I have the correct "HeliCoil" ("Recoil ", made in Australia), but not the special "STI" tap to install them. Is that special tap a must?

bbolesaz Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 If you are helicoil-ing a block, you need a bottoming tap, not a tapered tap. The tapering tap can be helpful to cleanly cut the 1st couple of threads at the top of the hole, then finish in with the bottoming tap. 1
