Enzo Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 I was going to ask this over on Wildguzzi, but everything over there is turning into a comedy routine and, apparently, they believe that your bike is running great is it 'don't backfire.' I happen to believe spark plugs can tell you a lot. I have a new torque wrench and I am torque crazy now. I noticed last time I put in some plugs that there is LOTS of variation in how one might tighten them down - which could really make some difference inside the chamber. SO - what IS the correct torque setting on a plug???????
Guest John T Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Factory manual states sparkplugs should be torqued to 20-30 N-M, or 15-20 Ft lbs. I just put a very small dab of anti-seize and use the torque wrench. I also don't like re-using plugs over and over. The crush washers on plugs are not designed for multiple use. Bikes run great!
docc Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 I learned motors from an aircraft mechanic. He was adamant that correct torque was required to properly dissipate heat from the plug. I believed in the old guy, after all he was not in a habit of pulling over to check if something went wrong!
