Guest bmo Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 While doing the recall work on my 2000 V11 sport, my mechanic found that the INSIDE of the rear gearbox case had been painted a nice shade of silver, presumably during manufacture. Now that’s a sudden level of attention to detail from Guzzi that I don’t want or need! Given the renowned quality of the paints used by Guzzi, this paint was never going to go the distance - needless to say, a fair proportion of it had flaked off and was floating around in the oil and helping out the bearings. The outer race of each set of bearings has been nicely shined from spinning in the case, and were loose enough to spin around the seat with your fingers. Obviously the seats in the case have worn down to the extent that the case should be replaced along with the bearings. Although Guzzi reckons it sounds like a one-off, I thought I’d let others out there know. If your bike is still to have the recall work done, it might be a good idea to get your mechanic to look for any evidence of paint on the inside of the rear cover and check the seating of the bearings. I’d also recommend checking for paint flecks next time you replace the transmission fluid. In fact, if anyone has experienced the same, please let me know – it might be good to be able provide other examples of the handiwork of the Lake Como Phantom Painter to the importers.
big unit Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Thanks for the information, any pics. I take it they are fixing the problem for you at no cost. It makes you wonder what is going on in the factory or their parts suppliers.
Paul Minnaert Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Ive seen 2 boxes( grey and black) from the inside, both didn't have it. But they are painted before they are machined.
callison Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Given the porosity of Guzzi's rather poor castings, the paint might be the only thing holding the oil in there...
