OK, now I know what I will do with my exhaust to bring out a proper sound. I want something along the lines of an open exhaust without any consideration for a noise regulations etc.

 

The reason I can do that is twofold; firstly, if Harley guys can do that why not me and secondly, I do not ride in the city too much, use my bike for entertainment only and my neighbours are far away and don't care. The only consideration is I do not want to loose any performance but having Power Commander already I think that'll be easy.

 

I would imagine some kind of nice looking end cans only would be the best and I would keep my stock cans after all just in case if I really wanted to revert to stock for a while which, having PC, would be a snap.

 

I consider getting another set of stock mufflers (take offs) really cheap from my dealer and totally gutting them but maybe somebody will have any better suggestion, please? Does anybody make open pipes for our bikes?

Why not Mistrals? I have a pair and like them a lot. They sound good (reasonably loud) and you get a little bit on the top end. You will need to open up the intakes as well. Can you imagine getting much air through those miserly little snorkels?

I have the Mistrals as well along with the FAST BY FERRACHI air box eliminator. If you dont hear the roar from the exhaust you will definitely hear the HONK from the air box. :o By the time you hit 60 mph it all disappears as the wind noise takes over. Yet somehow it does not sound as obnoxious as most of the Harleys I hear. :lol:

Chalk it up to the character of the GUZZI.

I like the stock sound. Not obnoxious and a nice throaty sound. I suppose about 5-10% louder would be OK but I wouldn't spend any $ for it unless it would improve performance, which I doubt.

 

The airbox is interesting though. I like the thought of some intake growl! Especially if it is functional and will add performance. :blink:

I took off just the rubber snorkels. This increased the sound a little. My wife noticed at least.

I have the alloy Mistrals and I agree with all the comments above. They sound really great without being obnoxious or too loud. "Just right"! :D

Go for open pipes! I am sure some hog specialist could custom bend something for you.

If performance is an issue, you could probably dyno tune it with various restrictor sizes. I am sure you could get a bit more power. With open pipes and a restrictor, the tighter the restriction, the more low end and the looser the restriction, the more top end power. WEAR EARPLUGS! From what I have read, the Leo Vince's are a little louder than the Mistrals, and you can probably remove the fiberglass damping material to make it even louder. ps don't go driving by my window when I am sleeping!

Not only do the Mistrals sound great but theu are also considerably lighter than stock. They also look more appropriate on the bike (I think the stock silencers are heavy looking and ugly).

I have the air box eliminater kit, and and find the noise from the airbox somewhat irritating.I still have stock pipes though, and think that maybe the back pressure from them might be be a factor.If new pipes or adjusting the Co2 doesn't help that,I'm going to put the airbox lid back on.

Reference taking out the innards from the standard pipes, I've done this, re-chipped with a 'Raceco' chip and am really pleased with the performance and sound.

They are a bit awkward to get apart but if you do do it I would recommend removing the central core but leave all the glass padding as I think that this combination gives much better flow and the noise is a lovelly deep growl but does not have that horrible Harly 'look-at-me-with-no-exhaust' type boom - each to their own!!!

I did this originally as my budget was tight but now am reluctant to change to aftermarget items as I've grown to love the noise and the looks - wierd I know, but I think the standard pipes look great!!!!

Yes, go for it! I have CF cans, and have removed the stock airbox and side covers, and use K&N pod air filters. The sound, both intake and exhaust, is just incredible - a nice low burble at idle, with the hissing of the intakes, and a great roar when you let it loose!

 

Makes me want to go out and start it up right now, just to hear it! :D

I don't know about Mistrals, which seem to be most talked about, but I have Gianelli's and they produce the best sound I've ever heard on a bike, with the possible exception of a Bimota Mantra (a twin with 4 silencers...)

 

How does it compare to a set of mistrals?

Gavin, I drilled my stock cans and it really helped the sound but I want even more now. Could you please explain the procedure for removing the steel core.

Hi,

Reference modding the standard end cans you will need to dismantle the entire unit by removing all the retaining bolts and sliding the inner from the outer - both ends clamp the centre like a sandwich. Once out you will be able to see the arrangement inside and it is possible to machine/cut it so that the pipe is straight through - I did it whith an end mill in a horizontal mill (a bit of overkill!!!) but you will be able to do it with hand tools. While apart I would remove 50-100mm of the padding around the end to allow the gases out of the holes that you have drilled in the ends, I've done this and I think it adds to the sound. I have not removed all the padding as I was worried that It might end up sounding like a Harly !!!! It might not, it might make it sound even better - any one with an oopion?

When you re-assemble them smear a bit of exhaust sealant (the stuff in a tube that looks like toothpaste) around the inside of each end plate - make sure all traces aare washed of the outside before starting the engine. I did not use any sealant and one side has a small leak that after maybe 100 miles you can see exhaust gas marks on the can - trivial but annoying.

It is not a quick job, allow at least a 1/2 day, and it is fiddly but well worth the effort in respect of the sound - a really good balance loud and throaty.

What year and model are you referring to? The stock cans on my '02 LeMans are welded and cannot be disassembled in the manner you describe.

 

I have a humble request for the folks that post here:

Would it be possible for you to list the year and model of the Guzzi(s) you own in your signature line? That way newbies like me will know what bike the information you provide is intended for!
