GuzzTim Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 so after consideration I will be trailering the V11 to Seca for the track day... Rather than putting the soft ties up on the bars I've secured the front as such: Does this seem reasonable ?
GuzzTim Posted May 26, 2004 Author Posted May 26, 2004 but the rear is a bit more problematic.... Apart from any marks on the cans, what's the consensus on using the hangers as tiedown points?
Guest rrbasso Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 Hi, I work at a HD delership and have been been strapping down bikes in the frount end like you are doing for years and never had a problem.
Steve G. Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 As long as the front end is secured properly, it does'nt matter if you tie down the rear. The only time one should do it is if the bike is in the back of one of these modern [read cheap] new pickups, with the flimzy bulkheads in the box, which will bend forward into the truck cab when the bike is sucked down. If it were my bike in the picture, I would be tying the straps at a higher point than where you have it tied down, in particular the handlbars, close to the forks. The higher up it is strapped, the less leverage, read pressure, will be placed on the straps, which will not break, but will stretch a bit, causing the bike to move about a bit more going around corners. I've been loading my bike up in the back of my truck and heading to the deep south for ages now to do winter riding. That's 2200kms one way. No problems. Ciao, Steve G.
Guest bshpilot Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 this will work fine...its how ive done all my bikes for years (and friends when ive either hauled or HELPED haul 'em)...did this exact set up on a 2500 mi. route w/ 4 bikes on a 20ft trailer. the rear tie downs are not necessary...theyre for your comfort & piece of mind...consider that if you MUST use rear tie downs that you want them to PULL toward the FRONT (not the rear where they would pull the bike outta the truck or trailer...should the front tie downs come loose) be more concerned/focused on the tie down POINTS...i have had bad experiances w/ ANCRA brand mount points...THEY COME LOOSE because the spring is not heavy enough to keep pressure on the 'latch' ! i finally mounted STAINLESS U-bolts (obtained from boatus.com) i have attached a picture of the ancra mounts that i have had problems w/ !!! i do NOT recommend these...
