gstallons Posted September 27 Posted September 27 i don't know where all the members live concerning this Hurricane Helene / Tropical Storm / one helluva rain storm / bad weather. i hope / pray everyone w/ family & close friends in the pathway of this are safe and doing well. Please post about their conditions, etc. so we can be aware and hopefully relieved for them 3
p6x Posted September 27 Posted September 27 @gstallons If you take a look at the community map of this forum, you will find out who lives where. I took a quick look at those that have set their location inside the state of Florida, and did not recognize any of the nicknames usually posting. Those extreme weather systems are now happening around the world; sometimes in places where they never had before. Recently in Cannes on the French Riviera. In Houston, we had already two this year. A "Derecho" and Beryl. A repeat of the same situations with the same consequences all around.
activpop Posted September 27 Posted September 27 The south will be inundated with heavy rains today. Major flooding to come in these areas. @docc could be in this rain band...it is over a wide area. Hope all stay safe. 1
docc Posted September 27 Posted September 27 I just drove a couple hours through the leeward edge of it. Just rain and no high winds. My old stomping ground on the Florida left coast got it. The storm surge is the worst. Not just a wall of fast moving water, but pushing trees and cars and debris. Then it has to flow back out.... 1
guzzler Posted September 27 Posted September 27 To all in it's path ...good luck and stay safe! We've also had our share of crazy weather down here but luckily not as extreme as other parts of the country or world. It's heartbreaking seeing the devastation that this causes to people's lives... 2

Living on the bank of the Cumberland River, we saw only a foot or two rise from reservoir releases up stream in Kentucky. Prayers for all affected by this. 1
HRC_V4 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 (edited) We got it pretty good in the tri-cities area of TN. A few trees down in the neighborhood, lost power for about 7 hours, we are on a water boil notice, but 30 miles south they got hit hard. A friend's grandmother's house got washed away in Erwin (house was empty). I have seen pictures of some of my favorite roads around here, Hwy 58 out of Damascus, and they are out of commission for a long time. One of my concerns is for the Wheels through Time museum, can't find any information on it. There were some very rare bikes there, and it was right on a creek. If anyone in the area needs help and is on this side of the mountains, let me know. Edited October 3 by HRC_V4 Add a note 1 1
PJPR01 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Incredibly sad to see the destruction, loss of life and the scale of damage to such beautiful areas. Hopefully over time it can all be rebuilt again! 1

Hopefully over time it can all be rebuilt again! What's incredible, is the most devastation happened in North Carolina, and not where Helene made its landfall. If I understood well, the affected towns were not under evacuation recommendation.
PJPR01 Posted October 3 Posted October 3 In a way similar to Harvey here, tons of inches of rain, all cascading down mountain valleys...end results of floods. Remember Houston had 60 inches of rain with Harvey spread out over a relatively flat area...the Carolinas in some spots got 30 inches of rain in mountain valleys...horrific flooding/momentum of the water washing structures and roads away as if they were toothpicks. Just awful. 1
HRC_V4 Posted October 3 Posted October 3 The above post is correct, 30" of rain running down valleys was the issue, we have rivers here that have been turned into lakes by dams, the lakes can absorb the rain and the dams can control the lake levels. We saw no real flooding, but 30 minutes down the road in Erwin and Greenville which are right at the base of the mountains, had major flooding, look for videos of the Nolichucky dam. 1 1
Pressureangle Posted October 5 Posted October 5 I've seen more than a few hurricanes, this one was special...for a few reasons. First, it blew up very quickly. The storm surge was not only deep, but very fast as the sand piled up in the coastal towns attest. Then, it stayed very strong over land- much moreso than I've seen or should have been expected. I just drove down the path through Georgia, there was 200 miles of no power. I saw trees still laying on downed power lines a week after the storm- it will take 2 or 3 months to get that all cleaned up. I saw steel farm silos blown in- not just lids off but literally crushed. For a hundred miles, I saw speed limit signs on the square posts with holes on all 4 sides blown nearly horizontal. So flat the first one I thought a truck backed over. A radio tower had the top blown over. Hundred year old trees were uprooted everywhere. Many homes and cars crushed. Fortunately, FEMA wasn't there to interfere- communities had set up dumpster depots where people could dump trash. The lumber companies set up stations to bring wood and tree fall to be ground. I saw more log skidders and log trucks in towns and yards than I ever saw working the woods before. Fortunately, they don't have floodwater to contend with there. Here's the punchline- people in the Carolinas collected rain seeds. WTF would they seed a cat 4 hurricane for? 1 1
Goofman Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Another interesting question: WHO rain seeded a cat 4 hurricane that would track over the States? Talk amongst yourselves.👵 1 2
