After remounting my 2002 LeMans front wheel with its new Dunlop Roadsmart 4  (please see picture for proof) and feeling like an ace mechanic for how easily it went on, I have been floundering with getting the rear wheel back on. I've reviewed the little line drawing in the owners manual and threads on this forum, and am convinced that the spacer I have on the right side of the bike between the thin flat wide washer and the swingarm should really go inside the hub assembly, between the rear end housing and the wheel where the splines engage.  If this is correct, then is there really just the very thin wide washer between the right wheel bearing and the right inner side of the swingarm?  Thanks for any advice on this!

From memory (it's while back...) the final drive more or less sits up against the swing-arm on that side.

Have a look at the drawing on page 43 of this document (according to the document viewer)

As I indicated, I don't remember exactly how it went back together, but I got it right by looking at those documents. B)

 

Edit: the short answer is, I think your assumption about where the spacer should be, i.e. " inside the hub assembly, between the rear end housing and the wheel where the splines engage" is indeed correct. :)

Spacer goes inside the bevel box.

Yes, indeed, the thin washer stays outboard of the right side needle cage that abuts the right side swingarm. Grease that needle assembly and thin washer liberally (with every tire change)!

The spacer fits on the axle between the inboard rear drive bearing and the inboard wheel bearing, within the hub drive interface  . . .

Yep I  put it together wrong once also, thinking "what is wrong?" Then feeling both silly and victorious once it went together properly.  The rear fender also was a bit of a struggle too.
