I located a V10 engine that lost a belt . I know it has a cracked head. I would guess that the piston hit a valve and it needs a replacement rebuilt head. Then it also probably needs a new piston. I’m curious as to how expensive it might get to rebuild this engine beyond what I know. I realize there is the usual upgrades of belts, gears and oil pump.

Don't spend any more than you can afford to throw away. IF (I am sure) you are talking about the timing belt you might want to plan for the worst . IDK if these are interference engines or not ? Bent valves , damaged head , piston , bent rod , etc . It has the possibility of getting upside down pretty quick . There is a reason for cam belt maintenance .

Oh yes, if a belt lets go they are definitely a collision motor. The fact it’s cracked a head would indicate it was probably motoring hard when it let go so chances are that everything above the crankcase apart from cam and rocker gear and the rocker cover will be junk. The rod may well be damaged as well and it will need big end shells on at least the side the damage occurred.

I’d suggest buying it would be a ‘For parts’ exercise rather than a rebuild option, but that’s me.

Yes I agree. These engines cracked heads even in normal use sometimes.
