LowRyter Posted Tuesday at 02:58 AM Posted Tuesday at 02:58 AM Elon questions the LA Fireman at 6:50 here. I don't quite think his STEM background is stellar. Anyway, the fireman explain about stuff like the Water Works. Frankly, I'd though Elon if played any game, it would've been Monopoly.

Why not the electric utility? This is how it works normally. In my Parisian appartment, I upgraded to 380 Volts to install a baking oven. The utility company did the upgrade free of charge. They would amortize their cost with the monthly consumption using an energy glutton appliance. I thought it would be the same here. If I wanted to install a DC charger in my garage, Center Point Energy which only provides the lines but not the energy itself, would obviously benefit from the increased consumption. But apparently, I also need to pay for the installation. Cherry on the top, they also told me that because it would be a dedicated installation to my house, any malfunction or maintenance cost would be born by me. Not really an incentive. Why not the electric utility? And considering that rural people could charge at home and be 40 miles to the nearest gas station, perhaps those rural folks might even want an EV? So far as subsidies, there's $7b in the infrastructure budget for the next three years for charging stations- provided the new admin doesn't sequester it. So far as charging stations. Tesla has started them and promised to open them up with adapters for other cars, then promptly fired the entire charging team. Perhaps trying to ration what was originally going full on? Perhaps Tesla Charging Systems should be spun off from Tesla Car Maker? Elon can own one or the other. Around here, both where I live and where I work, many DC charging stations are put in by either the local electric utility or a vendor like Tesla , Chargepoint, or EVgo. The electric utility is motivated to put in the required infrastructure to provide the electricity for the charging station because they make money on providing that electricity. Add to that the subsidies and advantages of installing chargers and the gas stations, shopping centers, and restaurants are typically going to make more money by spending some money. That is what businesses do. Tesla is the gold standard in that field, a business spends very little to get the Tesla chargers installed, but they also make less money from the chargers. Mind you, they still make money from having the chargers there, they get some money directly from the chargers but make more money by the increase in traffic to their business. That said, Tesla is run by a neurotic spoiled man-child, who does make strange business decisions at times, decisions that seem at odds with good business practice. But he is one of the richest men in the world (of course he started out being pretty rich, so mostly he makes money with money), so maybe he knows what he is doing. But Tesla is not the only player there. Other vendors, as well as the electric utilities themselves, will work with businesses to install chargers. It will certainly be easier to build out the required infrastructure to support BEVs then it will to build up the required infrastructure to support hydrogen fuel cells. The base electric grid is already in place. The charging of BEVs simply requires the end point infrastructure added. Hydrogen will require the entire infrastructure, from production, to distribution, to endpoint, to be built from scratch. And that doesn't include the shortcomings of hydrogen, many of which have yet to be overcome.

Tomchri Posted Wednesday at 11:05 AM Posted Wednesday at 11:05 AM A few years back the government ( morons) told everybody to get a diesel car. Then they figured EV was the way to go. They dropped a big chunk of import taxes, and no toll road fees. Wild quess, 95% of EV riders go there because of saving money. If the EV cars had a real efficient solar panel on the roof, more understandable if living in Spain, California ++, but not so close to the Polar circle. Oh well, I’m out. Cheers Tom. 1

The Governments of the time were sold bullshit by the oil companies with regards to diesel powered cars because they make more money per barrel of oil from the far less refined diesel and the yield per barrel is higher so more profit. The rubbish they pedalled to European governments was better fuel economy (true) and "don't worry about the pollution we have future tech in the pipeline that will solve all that" (rubbish) The car manufacturers were on board because they could charge more for a given car because it used less fuel and the Bureaucrats bought it hook line and sinker. Does all this start sounding a bit familiar? Governments being sold bullshit by people with their own agendas. The diesel issue was a simple one, money and profits, easy to understand. The environmentalist agenda is a little more complex and is routed in politics itself and power. Don't kid yourselves into thinking it's because greater powers are trying to save your children's future. Phil Edited Wednesday at 08:42 PM by Lucky Phil 1
