There are not many Guzzi dealers in The States and this is not a normal maintenance / replacement item . It will be an accident for anyone to have one on the shelf. Harper's; but I don't need it anymore. I have understood why that gear lever came off all the time. I will put the photos for reference. The first time the splines came apart, I put the shift lever in a different position than intially. Because it was too low for my taste. Especially when I rode in terrain, on soft sandy patches, I was standing. Shifting down was easy, but shifting up forced me to go low with the front of my foot. I did not realize, but the gear lever female spline only goes all the way in its original position. This is the reason why it always came undone. Duh.... If you want to adjust the shift lever height, you have to use the gear lever.
p6x Posted March 14 Author Posted March 14 With the gear lever removed, I could finally understand what was wrong. As you can see in this photo, this is the only position of both splines that will allow the gear lever to slide all the way in. When both parts came undone the first time, I set the shift lever at a different level, to suit my preference; but in the new position, the gear lever female spline would not go all the way in. As I did not know as it was previously, I did not think it would affect anything. As you see in the photo below, I could not get the gear lever further in on the male spline of the shift lever. In the photo below, you can see that the gear lever spline is slightly out of the male spline. It is possible that when you tighten the jaw, you actually make a force that pushes out the gear lever female spline: The photo below shows how the two parts should be connected. Hopefully, I have solved the problem for good. I will reassemble and test that I have solve the crux of the issue. 1
gstallons Posted March 14 Posted March 14 (edited) A small amount of wear will make a large difference . You are improving the clearance only the distance you are moving the lever on the shaft. Trust me , the only repair you can make (for now) that I would trust is to drill through the lever/shift shaft and install the double roll pin . You want to do this in a drill press to make absolutely sure you have a perfect hole the correct diameter and the hole is true. If the shift shaft is 16mm or 5/8 diameter you can use a 1/4 roll pin and you will not hurt the integrity of these parts. p.s. You will want to drill this hole parallel to the pinch bolt . audiomick Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Pinning it will keep you going for a while, but I reckon, looking at the photos, that the levers are just knackered and need replacing. Patch it up, and start looking for a replacement. 3
gstallons Posted March 15 Posted March 15 That is why I waited to advise about doing anything until now . 1
p6x Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 Somethinig to take into consideration; I brought the bike from Arizona, and used it extensively. This gear lever issue happened right after I decided to change the gear shifter position. This morning, I was going to long distance test the latest assembly, but yesterday I caught a nail in the rear tire, and I now need to take off the rear wheel to replace the tube. I have ordered a replacement gear lever from Harper's Moto Guzzi; Incidentally, without the gear lever problem, I would have been in the Panhandle yesterday, where they had high winds, still today.... so, fate! 2
gstallons Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Did Harper's give you any idea on ETA ? You know you have a crosswind as easy as those tractor/trailers went over !

They have written on their website that if they do not give a shipment tracking, it is because they are waiting for Piaggio to send the part. The Quota is extremely sensitive to crosswind. I was last year on that same I-40, and it was gusty. I would have stopped before being flown to Mars... I took my rear wheel down as I also got a flat; when it rains, it pours. I noticed that some washers were missing. Edited March 17 by p6x 1
gstallons Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Washers ? on the rear axle ? You need a parts diagram to see what is missing ?

I did check the part diagram before I started to take the wheel off. The two screws that hold the plate where the brake pad is do not have their lock washers. Not a big deal, I will correct before I put everything back together.
gstallons Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Are you using the Harper's parts catalog to make sure everything is there ?

I have downloaded the Spart Parts Catalog from "Thisoldtractor". However, lesson learned. Don't trust anybody to do the right thing. I had a Moto Guzzi dealership install Dunlop Trailmax new tires before I came back from Peoria last year. Maybe I am naive, but I would have expected them to put the wheel back together with all the proper fasteners. They have recently contacted me, to check if I needed more work done; I explained that it is a little out of my way to go to Arizona to do maintenance. I am going to send them an email to let them know what I found missing. Since they were the last one to remove the wheels... Edited March 17 by p6x 1

Don't get too hairy , this stuff may have been missing when they worked on it. 1
