Guest Steeltoe Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 I have noticed lines of streaking oil on the rear wheel, apparently from the rear gear box. Has anyone else experienced this? I have cleaned the wheel, and gone for another ride, only to find the same streaks of oil once again. It has to be coming from the rear gear box.
Guest Brian Robson Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 It simply might be grease from the splines. If its sticky, it's grease; if its thin it's oil. Grease good, oil bad. If it's grease, it means the splines are lubed, and that is good news.
Guest friz Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 sure its not coming from the air box??? if the oil level is to full it will blow out of the airbox and run down the back of the swing arm.
Guest bob.davison Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I just noticed this exact same issue on my 02 about a month ago. It is the 'sticky' grease - and I can not see any signs of a leak from any place. I haven't pursued it too far due to lack of time. Brian - you are thinking that this is not particularly unusual ? Thanks for any input.
Guest harley Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 I had the same problem with the bevel drive on my 2001 sport. At high speeds above 100mph it would sling so much oil out that it would run down the tire side walls. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the 6"axel seal that is visable when you pull the rear wheel. This didn't solve the problem. When I took it back to them they told me that it was just a little spline grease that I was seeing. I decided to pull the bevel drive apart myself and found that the left side double sealed wheel bearing was leaking. I replaced the bearing and have had no leak in 1500 mi.
Guest Brian Robson Posted October 2, 2004 Posted October 2, 2004 It is definitely grease in my case, as I am fastidious about greasing the spines and the "trails" of grease from the splines match the marks on the wheel. When I ride casually, the wheel stays clean; when I head out for a blast with friends, grease spots end up on the wheel. More dots of grease once 100 mph comes up
Guest Steeltoe Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 It turns out to be the rear gear box, a swipe of the finger on the bottom of the housing gives me the oily finger. I took it to the dealer for warranty repair.
