Guest V11Cowboy Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I just changed the engine oil, rear diff lube, and gearbox lube. I added gearbox lube in owner manual quantity and it is above the sight glass with bike on side stand and standing straight upright. I obviously can't tell how far above the top of sight glass it is. I can easily drain a little, but am curious as to how much air space there is above the sight glass in the box. Will slight overfill cause me any problems such as seal pressure blowout?
Guest ratchethack Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Just went thru this with my Pal on his '03 LeMans. It's exactly the same on my '00 Sport. If you added the recommended 850 ml (.9 qt) it should bring the level to just over the top of the sight glass with the bike level, and somewhere close to, or slightly over the top of the glass when on side stand, unless you left some quantity of old lube in there. How far overfilled might you be? Tilt the bike farther over to the left to get a read thru the glass for an estimate. There's no need for precision, just don't err on the low side. As long as you aren't puking lube out of the vent at the back of the trans, you're OK. A high-speed run up to operating temp will tell you immediately. If you're a little overfilled, when it stops blowing out thru the vent you'll automatically have it spot-on. There's no risk of blowing a seal, and AFAIK there are no other overfill caveats. Shift with confidence, knowing how happy your trans is with fresh lube!
twhitaker Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I fill mine to near the bottom of the site glass to prevent the oil from puking out the vent. I'm probably 50cc short of what is recommended.
Guest rrbasso Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Just changed mine this morningm thought I was slick and made a little scoup for the tran floud so it would drain in to the pan and not all over the cross over, and guss what it draned all over every where but the pan
Ralph Werner Posted December 24, 2004 Posted December 24, 2004 Tony, I'm glad that I'm not the only one to do something like that! Reminds me of a friend who was looking for an item that went down the drain. He carefully removed the sink trap, didn't spill a drop, and then dumped it's contents into the same sink. BTW I fill mine to the top third of the sight glass.
