Timing gears

Has anyone on this forum put timing gears on a V11 Lemans? MG Cycle told me it can be done, but they were unsure if I would need the extra $115 plate. It seems that there are 2 different types of pickups on the cam sprocket on the injected models. Some use a slot and some use a bump to excite the sensor. If it uses the slot the extra plate is not required. Any info on the 2002 V11 Lemans timing sensor would be appreciated.

Hank, if you haven't already I would check around at some of the other lists like http://pub.alxnet.com/forum?id=1021777 and http://www.guzzi.com.au/forum/guzzi/ and discuss. I too have considered gears.

From what I've seen there are some pretty opinionated positions regarding gears and types(alloy, straight-cut, etc...) and their efficacy.

There are a couple fells on the Moto Guzzi Correspondence List that are supposed to post some long-term findings, and maybe you might ask what their status is. But there were some folks complaining about some maintenance and wear issues, especially in regard to finding actual aluminum shavings in the oil/cover after a short while.

The gears are also substantially more noisy than the chain, although personally I think gears sound neat :P But the advantage is spot-on valve/cam adjustment. Other than that, it's just neato factor really.... at least from what I've read.

I also hear that the best alloy set to get is from Agostini.

I used aluminum timing gears on my 85 Lemans street bike and my 85 Battle of the Twins Lemans and they did not have any problems. BTW a pic of my Bott bike taken in at Daytona in 1986 can be seen on http://www.corywest.com/ . Just click on Dads Racing days and scroll down. Not a very good pic of the bike. Also I am standing in the background.

1985 was a while ago, so I don't recall who made the gear set, but they were aluminum. Of course the Guzzis then had carbs and the ignition was points driven by a distributor looking thing on the top of the case rather than the cam sprocket. So the pickup was not an issue.

Raceco UK had an article about a V11 Sport that they installed a really aggressive cam into. The change required them to also switch from timing chain to gears. The folks at Raceco seem to be pretty helpful, so you may want to consider sending them an e-mail to get more details.
