helicopterjim R.I.P. Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 I just watched the memorial in Groesbeek for the liberation of Holland on television. Thankyou, Holland, for remembering the Canadian soldiers.
Guest jasper Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 he jim, that's a bit early we remember those who helped liberate holland on the 4th of may... (i live in nijmegen close to groesbeek and my girl friend is canadian...) It's very impressive to walk around groesbeek and see all the white crosses.... Freedom is a very delicate thing!! Ciao jasper
helicopterjim R.I.P. Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 Today was a Canadian ceremony. Tomorrow is the Dutch ceremony but the day is not important. Every day we live is a part of their legacy - even here in Canada.
Admin Jaap Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 This year is the last year the surviving Canadian veterans are coming over to participate. After exactly 60 years there aren't many left and for the remaining few the trip is too tiring.
helicopterjim R.I.P. Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 Smoky Smith is there. He is one of the last surviving Victoria Cross recipients.
Admin Jaap Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 After 60 years (!) the Dutch government finally allowed Polish veterans to participate. The Cold War made that impossible. They also played a big part in liberating Holland.
badmotogoozer Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 My Grandmother was invited to Holland and regularly participated in the memorial services before her death. She lost her brother in the liberation of Holland. I always thought that it was very thoughtful to include her, and it always meant a lot to her. Ryan
Skeeve Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Hey, what's "Groesbeek" mean, anyway? There's a town in TX called "Groesbeck" [county seat of Limestone Co.]; I imagine it's a Deutsch cognate of the Dutch "Groesbeek..." Call me Curious
Admin Jaap Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 The name Groesbeek probably derives from Groessbeck (german/dutch dialect for "big brook") 100% chance the town in TX is named after Groesbeek in The Netherlands.
