thgil Posted May 16, 2005 Author Posted May 16, 2005 The thing is your probably right,i admitt [and you may laugh] i've ony done a 1000 miles on her so to truly say i've owned and ridden a G would be taking the p*** .And yes mine is pretty much like a female if she aint got a headache she'll blow your mind, but if she has [and this seems like most of the time] well need i say more.............One thing i forgot to mention is she has a datatool3 alarm ,now could this be causing any problems do you think?

Sell it on ebay. The best security is a ground anchor and a GBFO chain. Your Guzzi does not need the evil alarm which everyone will ignore anyway. Besides which, a Guzzi is female.... What the F does she want with a tool?
big J Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 My starter went recently, so badly damaged it was u/s but investigating things I found out that many european cars use the same starter but turning clockwise instead of guzzi's anti clock. You should be able to pick up a solenoid assy for pennies from a good starter repair outfit.

Murray Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 There should be three wires on the back of the solieniod two heavy ones and a really light one. Actully before doing this go make sure your battery terminals are tight and cleam and the earth to the chassi has a good metal to metal contact. Without doubt the starter is the highest current drian on the bike anything to hinder it will cause a problem. Take your battery/ bike down to the local auto sparky and get a loadt test done (usally very minuimal - free cost) This will tell you if your battery is ok. Back to the three wire the upper heavy one leads directly to the battery there is no switch fusable link or any other interuption be careful when messing with this. Check that the terminal is tight (disconnect earth lead of battery before using any metal tools on this) and clean. With battery connected bike out of gear remove the small wire and arc with ethier another piece of wire or a screw driver from the top terminal of the soleniod to the small tab. The starter should turn the motor. If it does then you probally have a switch relay side stand switch or some other issue. If you get a clunk but no turning then the dreaded magnets are probally shagged. If you get nothing its probally the soleniod. Disconnect battery and remove starter motor to confirm the solieniod with a battery and a set of jumper leads connect the earth/ negative lead to the body of the starter with the postive lead touch the lower of the two large terminals place foot ( in insulated boot) upon motor and the accleration and torque of these things tends to flip them everywhere with no load usally with a few sparks on intial touch. The motor should spin freely you could try hooking the postive up to the upper terminal and shorting the solieniod again you should be able to see the gear of the starter motor throwing out and then the motor should spin. NB do not run a unloaded starter motor for an extented period of time they are desinged to work under load and will contiuniously acclerate until destruction.
thgil Posted May 28, 2005 Author Posted May 28, 2005 Hello Murrry, Having tried most of what you and everyone else said found out a few things these are,yes the solenoid is causing some of the problem which has now been replaced. Then changed all the siemens relays which are apparently crap these have been replaced with bosch ones. Also the bushes in the starter motor were replaced but as the starter was opened up water was found inside and it appears this was shorting the electrics.Having never used a jet wash on the machine i could'nt figure why this was(it had not seen rain for months). Then it occurred to me that when i gave the bike back to guzzi(thanks to the guys at worcester)to get the engine re sprayed because of the dodgy paint guzzi had used, and i can only assume that this might have been pressure washed and the water must have got in at the top right of the starter.Anyway all this done it was assembled and lo once again the mighty vee twin roared into life and the twisty roads trembled as she and i danced upon the humbled tarmac(whoa there).Anyway the electrics and alarm have been tested and all seems well,so now its trial time and the problem(s) have been sorted then i think that i will take her on tour. thanks for the help!!!!
belfastguzzi Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Take it apart, clean it, grease it and see how that goes. It could be stuck with old dried up dirt/grease. That's been the case on other starters/solenoids that I've had to fix. I think it's a good idea to clean and grease the internals anyway, as it all seems to come pretty dry from the factory. My starter started screeching at only 2,000 miles, but it's been fine ever since giving it some TLC – like it should have had at the factory. If your solenoid is working, but "not working properly" then there's a good chance that it's just sticky and can be easily fixed. How old, how many miles has the bike done? 51756[/snapback] It's screeching again. These things seem to lose lubrication and go dry relatively quickly. Can't think why that shoud be?
