Drive box mount crack?

Guys,

 

I had my official 'shakedown' run on the Sporti today. It's been about 6 years since I've been on a Guzzi, and I certainly recall why I loved that '96 Sport. I had a great time!

 

Since this was a 'getting to know the bike' run, I was constantly looking for any sign of trouble or problems. Aside from a bit of drive box fluid leak (appears the fill bolt wasn't tight enough), everything was great.

 

EXCEPT...

 

I found a hairline crack in my rear drive box. The crack is near the inside boss for one of the rear triangular brackets (nearest the drive box flange). The crack is very small, however it DOES seem to 'open up' when I flex the drivebox flange with my fingers. This makes me think it's all the way through the box (though I haven't pulled the wheel to check the other side), vs just a surface crack.

 

I'm curious if this is a common issue. If so, what's the cause, and what's the remedy? If it's NOT common, what's the best fix here? Can the drive box housing be welded from the backside? Should I just ignore it (doubtful)? Do I need a new housing?

 

I'm not sure if it's related or not, but the large hole below (also a triangular bracket mount point) has been stripped in the past. The bolt was loose in this mount. I plan on inserting a heli-coil as a repair. I'm assuming there's sufficient material to drill and put in a new thread? Is it possible the stripped bolt somehow allowed stress to be applied to the cracked hole?

 

I guess I'm just looking for input on this issue.

I guess both issues, the crack and the stripped hole, are "fixable"(certainly the stripped hole is), but I would wonder if it would be worth doing.

 

 

I would check on eBay or someone like Rebootguzzispares.com for a salvage unit.

 

But regardless, I would get it fixed or replaced before the boss cracks off entirely.

I guess I'll try to find a good AL welder, and see what he says about it. The stripped hole I can fix myself. I've already started scanning eBay, "just in case".

Agreed. As of right now, this Goose is out of service. I'm glad I found this before it became a significant (ie, more destructive or painful) issue. Will any / all spine frame rear drives work? V11, Centauro, Sport, etc? Or do I need a Sporti specific unit?

 

Oh...and anyone have one for sale? :luigi:

Not compatible at all. Richard has a V11 Sport, this is a Sport 1100i. I don't think they even have the same number of splines. Gear ratios are wrong for a swap too, the V11 spins the shaft slower than the Sporti.

Carl,

 

Any idea if the housings are compatible? Maybe I can find a housing with a bad gear, twisted shaft, etc. While it's still needle-in-a-haystack, I'll take all the options I can find.

You're in luck! Reboot Guzzi Spares. Click on "Spares", then click on the Sport 1100 photo and there is an Injected Sport rear box 11 items down "Drivebox inj model from £200.00". Email Pete Morcombe at pmorecombe@hotmail.com and tell him I sent you. Pete's a real good sort to do business with. The best part is he takes PayPal which is undoubtedly the easiest and most cost effective way to deal with obtaining anything from Europe (money transfers to Europe are absolutely Draconian and hideously expensive). I don't know if the carb sport box is compatible, but Pete can tell you. They're probably only cheaper because they're older.

The V11sport drivebox and the 1100sport drive box are entirely different architectures inside and and out.

A Tonti frame part will not work either- they don't have that hole (that's cracked) on the upper section. Is that a rear stabilizer or reaction shaft mounting point? The insides of a Tonti part ought to fit, but that's not your problem. At least the cases are cheaper than the gears, and if you can get both...then you get a backup set of gears (think lemonade).
