I sent my forks to the shop at the 1000 mile mark. At the time this was the only facet of the first service I didn't feel comfortable about tackling myself. The guy who did the job for me had 25 years experience on all types of bikes from vintage to new. I was pleased I had the job done, as it turned out one of the plunger rods had come undone and all the bits were at the bottom of the fork leg. I was in two minds as to whether the oil needed changed or not before that. I guess now, looking back I should have tackled the job myself. I had changed fork seals on the kid's old XL125 but the way I saw it then, an upside Marzocchi fork leg was a lot more sophisticated than the kid's old bike, let the experts do it as I didn't want to stuff it up. Next time I will be doing it myself. I had synthetic fork oil put in. I will be changing this it at the 12000 mile mark.

According to the red book that came with the bike it's 1000, 12000, 24000 miles. I don't think Luigi expects the bike to last longer than 36000 miles. (9 years at the UK bike average of 4000 mpy)

 

BTW - I just double-checked the factory service manual.  The fork oil change schedule from new is 1K miles and 6K (it lists nothing after that).  So presumably it's actually every 5K after the first change.  I've been using 10K intervals as a guideline.

 

Hope this helps.  Maybe others with better intelligence on this can chime in?

 

EDIT:  I just re-read this.  Is it any wonder so many guys just have the dealer do this!?  On the other hand, just how far are you willing to trust the "new trainee" in the back of the shop to do it?  You know - the skinny Goth-lookin' kid with the nose rings and tattoos and the backwards ball-cap - using YOUR bike to "learn on".  S'pose he'll get it right!?  I'll just do it myself, thank you very much...
