At Wits End - Need Advice

Hi Ya'll from Hotlanta.

 

I have posted here a few times and everyone has been great.

 

I have an '04 Nero Corsa. FBF Airbox removal and K&N Filter. Stucchi Cross Over, Power Commander, MG TI Exhaust.

 

Things worked great for about 2k miles, then much stuttering, sputtering, hesitiation, often when pulling off in 1st and when rolling up through 3 - 5k in 2 / 3 / 4th gear.

 

Bike only as 4500 miles on it. I took it into my dealer, Atlanta Triumph Ducati for help. It has been there now for 7 weeks. They have no idea what it is and can't fix it. They called me today and said they wanted me to bring in my stock ECU to see if perhaps it is something with the MG TI Race ECU.

 

I am going to bring the thread that a "jimbemotumbo" posted who seemed to have the same problem and fixed with a EFI Setup?

 

Don't know what to do? I am absolutely passionate about this bike and I will NOT get rid of it. I know someone out there can fix it. I am going to give my Atlanta Dealer one more week, but after 2 months I need to get it back before riding season is completely over with.

 

That being said, I want my bike back no matter what! Any suggestions? Is there a GUZZI Specialist somewhere in the country I can ship it to, fly out there and have it worked on & shipped back? Is there a "GUZZI GURU" out there I can pay to come to Atlanta and fix this?

 

I am open to any suggestions as I refuse to give up on my bike, I love it too much -

Have you tried it without the PC?

 

Makes sense to swap ECUs, but it would be useful to rule out a problem with the PC box too.

It's your proximity to MGNA. They could cross-thread a light bulb. Now they're casting bad voodoo on your bike...

You mean like their .0014% failure rate according to Dynojet U.S. (of their Worldwide database). Heh, yeah, I'd suggest everyone running one to immediately remove and pitch them. Good stuff, thanks.

 

Michael, as has been suggested, the PCIII is a one plug deal to pull and bypass... though based on your post, I doubt this is the problem. It could be something as simple as a failing TPS, or yes, perhaps ECU.

If it does fall into the 14 in a million category, as mine did, they may be able to repair free of charge.

Todd suggested that I may have just needed the firmware update. (thanks Todd!)

I sent it to them paying one way shipping and they quickly sent it back, quickly and at their cost, repaired.

Otherwise their FAQ suggests that the wires may become fraid. (and I would bet that would account for more than ten of of the fourteen in a million failures.)

FWIW my wires looked the same as when I sent it to them, so I assume they did not replace them.

Keep us posted Michael. I have more than a passing interest in this nowadays!

 

Took my goose to the local MG shop this weekend and checked my A/F, etc on the dyno. Everything was perfect right outta the box, so to speak. They also thought it was the ECU ... glad that wasn't it!

sure makes sense from a troubleshooting angle to remove the aftermarket electronic items one at a time to see if that helps. Don't assume that the dealer thought of this most simple step. I've had dealers strip bolts, put in too much oil, not enough oil and never checked after an oil change; put (Automotive) transmission mounts in upside down and wonder why the trans. sits higher than before?!? These are so called '5 star dealers', too!

I have an older PC on my EV. A few years ago, I had the exact trouble you describe. During a trip to the Kentucky rally, it became so bad it was pucking raw gas out the exhaust.

 

I figured out what it was!!!!

 

I was turning the "choke " lever (actually a fast idle lever) before I was turning on the key. The power commander was setting O with a partially open throttle, or some such evidently. Ever since I realized what was going on, I allways turn on the key, listen to the fuel pump pressurize, then move the choke lever. I have not had a problem since. I am still using the same PC and have never had it fail. My discovery/explanation is a partial assumption on my part. Perhaps Todd can shed some light. What I can say for sure is that since I changed my starting proceedure, it has been fine.

I've no experience of the PC and don't know the intricacies of how it works, but surely this can't be right? Or can it? Do they work like that, or just coincidence?

Mike, mine did much the same...reset valves, TPS several times...pulled Power Commander out, put it back in...ran compression checks...pulled the gas tank to get at wiring harness and found the aluminum paperized heat shield with a imprint of the open air box filter in it. Heat shield had pulled away from adhesive on bottom of tank and was suffocating motor. Maybe it's simple and dealer hasn't looked there yet? k

ELLO UZZI,

 

I with Todd on this one! The chances of the PCIII taking a dive opposed

to something/anything Itailain is well... just that.

 

Besides, all the dealer would have to do is "CLICK" it out and they'd know.

And I hope there not that DEALER who on there own, wouldn't.

 

Sounds to me like a firing "Pick-up" of some kind or that with your mods

(Nice ones I must add!), your F.I. was never re-adjusted and ran to rich and

now there just clogged and grimmy, or worse, you burned a valve.
