What is it, where was it made, how big or how many were made? No points given for correct answers, let's just see what comes up on the "Meter of Absurdity".

I hope you all do well as I'm out of town for about 13 days and won't be able to post the answer.

Interesting machine. Looks like a Bohmerland. If that's right, it's Czech and not many were made, never mind exist nowadays. Can't work out what the engine is, though. If it's some sort of prototype, then possibly just the one. Looks big - 1500cc?

OK, let's see: flat-four engine, is it, and pressed steel frame? The reading lamp attachment looks handy, as do the fire-belows either side of the forks. The rider is clearly an expert since the outrigger wheels have been folded up at the back.

Hey, forget the bike, if I can find riding gear like that I'll swap my V11 for a Californian!

Sorry.

Not a flat four; maybe a sidevalve V-four. The only other manufacturer that I can think of without Gurgling is Zundapp. But I will have to search, I think.

That took a lot of looking.

IZh-1 1928 V twin 1200cc 24HP Russian.

Possibly the IZh-2, identical except for sidecar wheel drive.

Only one of each built. Probably both gone forever. The drawing is taken from the photograph I've found (http://www.autogallery.org.ru/k/i/izh1f.jpg) and there are a few things not clear still. What is the conical thing above the tank? Why does the engine look like a four?

I've learned a lot today about Soviet era machinery. Thanks, Carl.

Hey Mike. Good job! I got to that site while in the process of researching the Ural Patrol I have on order. That's right - I'm defecting!!! Or is that defective? Ah, never mind, I'll be in good company hanging with Rich Maund (vicariously, until we get to a rally at the same time).

They are great fun. Rather like a low powered two wheeler, you can get great excitement at less than death defying speeds, if you want it. I've recently seen a pic of a Breva with a sidecar [on the wrong side 8-)] and I'd rather trust the Ural than a bike with a cast alloy swinging arm...........

It looks to me like the conical thing is a brush guard type weather protector on the handlebar. Probably not a bad idea considering its native climate.
