Rumoures of BFG being totally lost proved to be unfounded when he was spotted on his way home after hearing that there was a sale on "pipes" for his Scurra

I think this is a balancing aid.

 

Probably BFG needs it to counteract the drugs which cause vertigo and severe disorientation, as shown by his dream of riding his Scura round the walls of Angkor Wat or somesuch relic.
