Anybody follow the Dakar Rally?

Lets hear it for the norwegian Pål Anders Ullevålssæter (impossible name, i know), finished seventh (I think) two years ago and ninth the year before that (as best amateur/rookie). Last year ended with a broken collar bone, but he won the WC in Desert Rally earlier that year.

He drove down there in his own mobile home, with a crew of... one, financing everything himself with his family team and has secured himself a brilliant new KTM at last.

Yesterday at the first African leg he finished 10th, and climbed 14 places on the overall ranking.

Big him up!

I've really enjoyed LWR. Always a P-D fan I hope Charlie's movie is a hit.

You say he was on BMW? Guess he's still pissed at KTM.

on some levels that race looks so easy the ground looks so smooth and they don't look like they are going very fast. Cause most of the shots are from the helicopter!. once they get in closer they're being thrown around like a sock puppet in the dryer the ground looks more like sandy rock quarry than smooth dunes. Also they're going just about WOT all day long and know they could actually die from it. Balls, Huge Brass ones at that. pht-brass_balls.jpg

The hardest leg is today, they expected 12-15 hours in the seat. Flat out..... If that doesnt wear you out...

My man is on sixth overall. Huzzah!!

In an interview he told that this year the bikes had a speed limit of about 160km/h. He meant that was a lot more dangerous than going 200, because they are now constantly being overtaken by talentless dimwits in cars doing 220 kmh and going blind through the bikes dust trail.

yes awoke this morning to the sad news that Andy had been killed instantly from high speed crash [broken neck] he will be sadly missed by all, but especialy in his community of Keith sa where he had tremendous support. R.I.P a legend in off road endurance events.

Re the Dakar, terrible sad news about Andy Caldecott, a real legend here in Oz after having won the Australian Safari 4 times, the guy had huge talent and will indeed be sadly missed. Still a get off at 150km/h on those desert tracks doesn't bear thinking about.

Having driven a '65 model VW Kombi thru the Sahara in 1974 and unexpectedly getting "air" from a blown away dune at 80km/h gives a small smattering of the conditions these guys have been hammering thru at ridiculous speeds. More power to them I say. If you live for the adventure be prepared to die for the adventure.

  • 2 weeks later...

A riding friend was complaining today of our coverage of racing events here in the US during the winter. He asked who 'won' the PD. I assumed KTM but???

and what of Charlie? I hear he crashed out but is he giving us a good vid of the event?
