Paul Minnaert, did you notice any changes to the gyroscopic affect in your chain driven Guzzi? What changes (if any) did the 90-degree gear change to the chain final drive have on the bike?

The original post about gyroscopic results of the crank & other mechanical bits is a great topic...I would like to learn more about this subject (anyone know of other good books to read about it?). The Motorcycle Design book written by Aprilia can be hard to follow at times.

thanks.

Steve G & Al....comments from you are also welcome :bier::bier: ....but, seriously, I've had a project in mind for a couple of years & this topic could be a deciding factor to move forward in one way or not.

BIKE magazine had an interesting article about Yamaha's decision to make Rossi's bike with a reverse rotation crank.

The article claimed the reverse crank reduced gyroscopic effect of the wheels, making the Yamaha easier to flick through the esses.

Dunno how they quantify that

Probably when Rossi comes back to the pits and says,"dat'sa about-ah rye-eet."

........ chain driven Guzzi?

What!... Why?.....

Well, to make it clear: the swallower is a project from the netherlands, I know the guys, and asked for pictures to put on my website, because I like what they are doing. Why did they make it? it allowed changing gears easy each race, the unsprung weight is lower. The hossak front forks make it a real different bike to drive. I don't think rotating mass from the shaft makes a difference there.

Is he the only one riding a bike like that?

That could explain his dominance.

But then it might lead to questions, like how does he keep the bike upright in first gear????

Yamaha is in first place with points, no doubt largely because of Rossi.

But I think they have the best handling bike out there.

Some of it may also be because of Ohlins.

But I can only imagine how much more flickable a reverse rotating engine would be at 200MPH.

Correct.

Winning a race or a championship is a combination of many different factors ,starting from drivers talend and adding bike , team, developement funds ect.ect.

I remember back in the late nineties when Biaggi was provoking Doohan to step out of the Honda and do it on another bike. Well nothing happened when Biaggi he went to Honda either

It is also a matter of what bike fits to the racing style of such extreme riders. I.e. "King" Carl (Foggarty) when switched to Honda came at fourth place at the end of SBK while switching back to his Duck won one championship more. The opposite happened with Koczinski.

Rossi has prooven a surprizing fact that regardless what the bike, more or less he won the championship.

All he has proven is that he won the championship and is the best.

If he can win it on a Guzzi, then he would prove that he is the best regardless of what bike he rides.

He is not unbeatable on any given day, and I still suspect that he has the best bike out there.

I don't know the statistics, but I believe this is his best year ever. :huh2:

Maybe he keeps getting better, or maybe it is the M1 getting better.

I suspect the other Yamaha riders will do even better next year

If he can win it on a Guzzi,he's disproved Einsteins theory of relativity, can perform time travel and may well be able to walk on water.
