Guest Aughtsix Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 The question is pretty much all said in the title. How much wind protection does the little fairing on the Coppa afford? I realize it wouldn't be what the LeMans is, but how much better is it than none at all?
DeBenGuzzi Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have the buell fairing and to be honest these "flyscreen" types are MOSTLY for looks I like that they protect the cluster tho. The coppa/scura so on screens are a tiny bit bigger but probably don't help too much more than redirecting the wind blast maybe 10-20% not much help.

Useless as wind protection. 73383[/snapback] I have a Sport with the small carbon fairing from Moto Guzzi. I agree, its not much protection, but it takes a lot of pressure away from your chest at long high speed drives (above 70 mph), and it differentiates from other flyscreens (example BMWs roadster screen) by giving almost no turbulence at all. With my old Beemer with the roadster screen the turbulence was so violent above 70 mph I couldnt see anything clearly.
Ballacraine Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 A small flyscreen can give suprisingly good wind deflection, but only if it is set up right in terms of height, angle & distance from the rider. The combination of me & my Scura means that the standard flyscreen is about 1 - 1 1/2" inches too short. That is why I am working on an alternative solution. Nige.

There is a lot more to it than that, but I am keeping it under wraps until it is complete. Nige.
grossohc Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have the cafe sport (same fairing) and it does a fair job at "sensible" speeds with not to much buffeting but it is no good at 100+ mph for any length of time. it may be worse if you are a tall chap, im ok cos im a shortars . But as my bike is a "keeper" I may in the future convert the bars/fairing the same as someone on this forum did with a coppa italia ( Great job). Gary
Guest Nogbad Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have the Motomecca flyscreen on my V11, and it is effective for its size, and as mentioned before, protects the instruments too. I think it adds to the style of the bike and is pleasing to look at.

I'd hate to think of how much that would cost though... The reason for my question is, there's a clean used '04 Coppa at the dealer up north for what appears to be a pretty good price ($9900 with the TI pipes). Since I've yet to fulfill my Guzzi lust (still seriously concerned about the lack of parts and support) I was wondering how good of an overall bike it would be with that bitty little fairing in our Oregon weather - read wind AND rain protection. I knew it wouldn't cut it for rain protection - nothing short of a Beemer RT does - but I was hoping for a bit more positive report on its wind protection. Oh well...

You'll get used to it... 73403[/snapback] Let's see, 190 cms, that makes you, what, about 6'2"? I'm 6'4" so that's close. I've ALWAYS been on bikes on which I look over the windshield, so yes, I'm already used to it, and in fact, prefer it. But I've also spent the last couple of decades primarily on Jap sportbikes that have at least some bodywork, and more of a fairing than the Coppa. Just don't know if I can adapt to it...
Guest Ray R Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 If you're in Salem, you're not far from me. I'm in Aurora....about 1/2 way between Portland and Salem. I bought a V11 naked this last summer. I'm also 6'4", and while riding, the wind got to be too much. I typically like to have wind protection from around the shoulders down. I added the Guzzi windscreen similar to what's found on the Coppa, and I really like the difference it makes. It's definitely not for weather protection. But it deflects enough wind to make my ride enjoyable. The naked has the lower clip-on bars, so my riding position is a bit different than that of the Coppa. I've seen the bike you're referring to, and it is quite nice. I bought my V11 from MotoInternational in Seattle, and the folks there are great. But the folks at Cascade are just as great. Can't go wrong at either dealership. MotoInternational has several brand new '04 Coppa's for $10,990, and they include the Ti exhaust and chip at that price (most Coppa's come with these from the factory). I've got one ordered from them that I'll pick up in a week or two, as soon as it arrives at their shop.

I mean, I don't expect it to be a GoldWing, but I've long since left behind appreciating the pounding of an unfaired bike. If it doesn't split the wind enough to make the ride enjoyable, it's definitely not for me. Since you're local you know the conditions typically encountered - everything from town riding to I-5 at up to 90 or so. I gather you're saying the little fairing on your naked does a good job under these conditions? Thanks
tikkanen Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I swapped my flyscreen to a V11 Le Mans half fairing. I also stand 190 cm (+) above sea level and I found the standard Scura screen to be more show than go. I´ve changed the screen to a MRA double bubble screen for this season but I haven´t tried it out yet - time will tell, whether this is worth the dosh. Cheers Søren
