Thought I'd get some feedback from the experts on Mobile 1 oil weight.  Which is best for a Lemans 10-40 or 20-50?

Neither.

 

If you are ordering it, get Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40. It's a true synthetic and has all the good stuff they've taken out of normal gasoline-engine oils in the last 5 years.

I'm looking for a SG rated oil, and I'm not thinking Truck and SUV stuff is SG rated. I could be wrong, but it is recommended (in Guzziology) that we use motorcycle SG rated oils. Mobile 1 has these available, and they rate VERY well. SJ rated oils reduce phosphorus to help catalytic converter lifespans, but phosphorus helps the cam and follower, so (as you can see) motorcycles get no benefits of the SJ and take a hit on wear instead. SG retains the phosphorus.

20W-50 is recaommended for the 1100i. What does the "i" stand for?

Oh Golly, another oil thread!

Mobil 1 uses color keyed caps on their containers. If you don't know about API specifications, use Mobil 1 with the black cap, that's for bikes, has higher phosporous levels, and higher sheer viscosity for extra duty in bike engines which share lubrication with the gearbox/clutch. I know Guzzi has separate clutch/engine/gearbox, but if you want the best oil?

Avoid Mobil 1 red, and blue cap. Not for air cooled bikes.

Oh, and use 15w-50. In synthetic form, it is no problem using it in cooler weather. That's the thing about synthetic, is it's ability to retain it's rated viscosity while very cold, and very hot.

"i" is injection. The first "Spot 1100" was carburetted.

Rotella is good. The synth version is even better. I bought 2 gallons of it yesterday for $15 a gallon. I use it in my Jeep and will use it in the Billy Bob.

 

Diesel oil ratings are progressive. When a new rating is devised, the oil meeting that rating also has to meet all the old ratings. (This is not true for S[park]-rated oils) In the day, the CI-4-rated oils met the SG rating, so today's CI-4 and CI-4-plus-rated oils meet SG still.

I'd say 10W-40 is good for Michigan Late fall early Spring. Also it may be good for breaking in the bike for the first 10,000 miles.

But if you are Detroit motorcycle courier, stick with the 20W-50.

If you have any doubts find a 10W50...I am very happy with the Repsol racing 10W-50

Another alternative is Amsoil. Their automotive 20W-50 or 10W-40 is louded with lots of zinc and phosphorus.

Another alternative is to go with Mobil 1 but find a zddp additive like Valvoline Professional Series Oil Treatment or Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment or STP.

I tried Mobil One automotive and found the engine was noisier than the worn out oil that it was replacing, so I changed the mobile one out at 1000 miles for fear it was too thin.

The truck oil that Greg mentioned may be fine...I would just be concerned it is too thin for Summer in the city.

I have also been very happy with Maxima oils.

I tried Motul but felt it wore out quickly and was consumed too quickly.

Thanks Greg, thats good to know, Ive used rotella dino in my 1500 nomad for 30K troublefree miles,and in my 750 magna for 45K trouble free miles as well. Ive used castrol GTX 20-50 in the goose since the first service, but I think im going to go with the rotella T in it as well. I was a little concerned about the GTX protecting the cam and followers especially with what happened to a few here.

If you're going with Nutella, you'll have to change it more often. That shite is murder on the oil pump.

 

I can see how the multiviscosity of PB & honey could be superior.

 

has anyone tried that "PB & Jelly all in the same jar" stuff yet?
