throttle stuck?

I went for a ride last night. About 10 miles into the ride the rpms would not go below 3000, even though the throttle seems to be working fine. I rode it home that way, and the last couple miles it started backfiring as well. At home, the throttle cable and moving parts seemed to be working fine. I let it cool overnight, and still have the same problem cold, but at 2000 rpms cold. any ideas?

Patrick, if you've checked the throttle linkage thoroughly and that's not it, it's probably a vacuum leak in the intake. This would explain the backfiring. Check the throttle body clamps for tightness, and the intake rubbers for cracking beyond the surface cracking that will no doubt be showing up by now. I assume y'er charcoal cannisters are removed? If so, check the vacuum barbs on the manifolds to make sure they're plugged properly.

Have you left the fast idle lever on? That's always fun as it makes your braking distance longer!! Don't ask why I know (twice) :homer:

But Ratchet is probably spot on.

hehe, methinks the fast idle mistake is common to people named Martin, Martin.

My 97 Sporti backfired once during a ride and after that it wouldn't drop below 3000 rpm and just went a steady 55 mph. I pulled over and the right hand throttle body had blown completely out of the rubber mount.

I once had the plastic adjuster knob for the linkage catch on the shock remote reservoir knob.Never did it before or since.Wierd.

Thanks everyone for the sugestions! It was a lose clamp on the right side intake rubber thing. In fact almost all of them were lose to some degree. I tightened them and it ran fine again. Forums rock! :D
