Guest Nogbad Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 It is leftist greeny guilt, not the law, that makes me want to put it back on, if the gas evaporates so quickly. 89819 Forget the guilt. There is no proven AGW and the emissions of VOCs from your bike tank are probably exceeded every nanosecond by some oil refinery in Azerbaijan. Hell, if you are a leftist greeny what are you doing on a rip-roaring high capacity sportsbike at all? Sod it, enjoy it and hang it. The world is finite and will end someday whatever you do.
stogieBill Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Right now, there's no inspection even when bringing in an out-of-State bike like I did when I bought the Scura. All the DMV looks for is the apprpriate stickers signifying DOT/California/EPA compliance. If you've got the stickers, life is good. Now when I brought in the Daytona RS (originally purchaesd in the UK) there was hell to pay for not having a DOT safety sticker. You would think that a quick inspection of all things safety would reveal that , yes there are turn signals, mirrors, horn, headlamp, brake and tail lights and even a kick stand cutoff switch. You would be wrong. What I needed to get was a VIN verification from the CHP. Get that, a verification (alrady confirmed by the DMV) of the VIN and engine number. Bureaucratic logic I guess. Anyway, I didn't need the canister for the Scura. Still have the hoses and canister mount sans canister. I love California
rocketman Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 The charcoal canister captures gasoline vapors from the fuel tank and recycles it back to the fuel tank, thereby preventing the unburned hydrocarbons from being released to the atmosphere where it causes smog, ozone holes, Michael Crichton novels and scurvy. Is it absolutely essential to the bike? Heck no. Legal to remove them? Depends on where you live... Fortunately you don't live in California, where everything causes cancer and the CARB is more evil than the NSA. Many of us have "found" the emission control tidbits "missing" from our bikes with no ill effects. If your canister and associated bits of hose and whatnot happen to fall off, just make sure to plug the brass nipples on the intake side of the heads and do the normal throttle body balance, TPS adjustments and make a generous donation to Slug's "Give Me Money to Buy a Set of Alpina Spoked Wheels or I'll Club This Baby Seal!" fund. 89715 I removed my canister but never plugged the brass nipples. I left the tubing in place. How is this bad? Would it cause lean fuel mixture? Rocketman

Rocketman 89884 Sucks air in...How lean does this make it? I don't know, but it is no big deal to plug it. Beats burnt valves.
