macguzzi Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Well after trying everything suggested on this site I still had starter woes. Well problem solved I took the Valeo starter too bits, as soon as I pulled the end cap I realised something was amiss. The spring that holds the brushes in place was badly burnt, this could be due to the total lack of any insulation on top of the brushes causing them to short out! You can imagine the state of the com a quick brush up and all was well, it almost started before we hit the button! Worth checking guys
docc Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Mac, you just cleaned it and reassembled? Some lube anywhere?
Guest Nogbad Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Mac, you just cleaned it and reassembled? Some lube anywhere? 91792[/snapback] I wouldn't lube my commutator.......
macguzzi Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 Cleaned it and made sure there was insulation between the spring and the brush. It is not easy to get apart because they have riveted the body on, but they are very soft rivets!

It stayed quiet for a while, but is screeching again now.
docc Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 bfg, I assume you lubed the drive gear and the shaft it slides on? What kind of lube? And, Mac, did you replace the insulation with something? What did you use?
macguzzi Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 I used a bit of mica cut to size, even heavy gasket paper would do, an easy fix
