BMW R1200s

Well I just came home from a test ride on a platinum silver BMW R1200s, and I must say it was a hoot to ride! I know its not a Guzzi but IMHO its the best looking BM in a long time. The one I rode had the ohlins suspension option and pilot powers tires instead of the metzlers. Overall the bike surprised me with a lot of power, the downlow torque that big twin riders love. I would say from 3500-5000 rpm there is very quik throttle response and gobs of torque. The riding position suited me well, actaually felt more comfortable than my Rosso with a little less reach, something I hope to correct with Jean-Marc's bars.Handling was another matter as the bike felt heavy in front going into the corners, it may be an adjustment issue but my Rosso is much more stable and felt more balanced in the turns. I believe the 4 valve dual spark head is what gives it that extra snot. Not that I'm going to buy one, but I think its great twin sports bike, I would like to ride a breva 1100 but that doesn't seem to be an adequate replacement for the V11. I'd be interested in other opinoins on the breva and Guzzis lack of sports bikes.

Yep that's a bike that in these specs of power or perhaps a bit lower (anyway somewhere there) Guzzi has to make.

I would buy a Guzzi like this in production , and of cource with the exceptional beauty that :mg: can give.

That beemer seems like an ugly copy of the Sporti (&daytona bikes) (IMO :2c: )

Hmm at the other hand why don't I get another Sporti and get it :luigi: tunned up :unsure: ....hmmmmmm....a good idea as well. hehehe.

It seems to me after reading the cycle magazine reviews of this bmw that MG needs to put the MGS into production to show the world how to do it right :mg: They're both within 10lbs & 5hp of each other. I'd love to see a head to head comparison of thge two bikes. The MGS wins hands down in the looks department. Btw the Aprilia rsv mille factory bike won a master bike competition in this months CycleWorld against virtually all other sportbikes. MG can beat the Germans if they want to, but of course its expensive...

not only that they are offering a 4 year 38,000mi unlimited warranty, if I can land a great price on a aprilia and the insurance doesn't kill me. I might get that b4 I saddle myself in a harley.

I also like the BMW's for that 1200s style I only like the boxercup version all others are just too ugly. I can honestly say the only ones that tickle me is the 1200GS silver&black and the cream 1200C

I just need to do some more test rides and look farther into service interval costs for the ducati 999, because thats grown on me a lot over these few years. I just need to be rich with a large garage and buy'em all. :huh2:

They need a 4-valve engine, but not the old 4-valve, which was a field-expedient design, cobbled together on the cheap. Keep it air-cooled. 1200 cc or more. Word is, we'll see a peak of it this fall in a new LeMans . . .

Just demo'd the RT & GS yesterday they had a yellow S there also.

GS is very nice and really wanted to see an adventure but none short supply taking deposits on 07's though.

You can just tell that the RT 1200 would eat up many many miles of roadway, abs heated grips, seat, cruise electric winshield, electronic suspension control.

Looking for a bike to do some long distance on.

But this dealer also carries Ducati well I was seduced by two of them

999 (the R & S model little to much $$)

SR4S with full race kit early 2007 model totaly stunning.

The 999 is the first one I've seen in person and I can't get it out of my mind

With out a doubt totally addictive, stunning I gotta have it! Hell I aint even rode it yet.

Practicality be dammened I was justifying the RT or a GS to go along with my Rossa Corsa and Speed Triple so I could cover different bases but a Ducati 999 may be in my future.

Let me know what you find out on the maintenance cost. I asked the dealer and he said non air cooled bikes it can be a little more pricey but he said while the valves need to be checked at regular intervals they don't require adjusting always and that the intervals have been increased adjusting is what adds to the price hype, don't know yet but when I nail down the maintenance and insurance cost if it's in reason well.......

I called my dealer (great guys at motoprim) for the 999 they said between 600-1200 and thats with parts and everything(they mean oil change and so forth) so its not outrageous but its not cheap either by any means. I really like the GS Adventure but I didn't realize you couldn't find them anywhere, (who bought them all? I haven't even seen one on the road) I keep coming back to a street bob because I took a 2 hour ride today and with the roads in my area its 2 hours to roads worth riding a sport bike and that happens to be 1&hafl more than I'd like to spend on a 999 :huh2: great looking bike tho I so need a test ride. :bike:

nice thing about the harleys is any idiot can do the maint, like a goose :luigi:

I rented a 1200GS in May and drove it from Denver to Durango to Telluride to Denver. It was about 800 miles. I thought it did great, plenty of power, the bags were easy to use and it was comfortable. However, I wouldn't buy one. It's too bland. My buddy rode his 2004 1150GSA and everwhere we parked, people would surround his bike and nobody ever looked at mine. I think BMW took a step backwards in styling with the 1200. It might have been my own lack of experience, but it felt like the wind would almost blow it over. Also, It's too expensive. $16,000 is way too much.

 

While we're on the subject of touring bikes....

 

I'm thinking about getting a used Aprilia Futura or Ducati ST4/ST2 to take on trips. Any thoughts? I know I don't want to pay $1200 for service. There's a new old stock Futura for sale locally. It's a 2004, does anyone have any idea what it's worth?

In the Seattle area, used Futuras seem to sell in the $5,000-7,000 range. A new one? Well, there aren't any left that I know of. If his is a leftover, he may or may not have paid what was the original dealer price. If he did pay original dealer cost, this woul mean that he would have to sell at a loss to make it worth buying. This would doubly suck for him, as the battery, oil, etc. is already three yers old and would need changine, and the injectors and.or pump are likely fully or partially plugged. If he got in on the good deals Aprilia offered on leftover Futuras, as we did, it would allow selling it for about $9,000, as we did.

 

Futuras are pretty much dead reliable, except for charging systems. With a few mods, the reg/rect. can be made reliable, too. Still, I'd carry a spare and then not worry.

 

Factor heavily into the price the cosmetics of the body panels and saddlebags. These parts can be very difficult to get from Aprilia, and often—if you can get 'em—the paint and/or stickers will not match those on your bike. This is especially true for the red ones.

Thanks for that info. That helps me alot on prices. What is the difference in maintence costs between a Futura and an ST4? You seem familiar with Futuras, if you had to pick one (futura or ST4) which would you get? And why?

Now for a second thought the riding position seems to be quite comfy without compromising on sport., and a nice wiew.

Instuments look perfect , still classy white dials up there,

with a lighting that there is no match (yes it is auto adjustable depending on light.), + tech stuf (I am sure there is)

And a small research on the internet came up with many positiv points about it.

Such as the NO maintainance schaft drive,Sound excellent.

And there is more optional switchable ABS,

BMW said they made it as a sportsbike that kann handle also everydays tasks

very smooth and...BMW R1200S

 

I would concider buying it myself as well at the end. With a 12.5K Euros seems like a bargain, definatelly will have to give a test ride.

The dealer I was at had only a silver one and a yellow one, I would go with the yellow if I bought one. The only other color is the candy cane stripe, which doesn't do it for me. The yellow looks really sharp, I would definately get the ohlins suspension upgrade. BTW someone else mentioned in another thread that the sound was bland at best, but I found the sound to be very nice, riding without ear plugs I could hear a nice roll on exhaust note as I flogged it through some twisties.
