Scura - Tick, tick, tick when trying to start

Hey

 

In case the title left anything out.

 

I left my bike accidentally in park mode where the light stays on. Have had the bike for a year. this is the first time. I am quite proud of myself.

 

Anyway, went to home depot. Im in NYC and was around the corner. Not too many other options. I purchased a mobile rechargable battery with cables. It had some charge in already. Connected it to the Scura. Scura started. Rode home.

 

As soon as I parked I tried to start again and get a tick, tcik, tick when hitting the starter button. Clutch in, stand up.

 

Any ideas?

If the battery was totally discharged it may not recover enough to start the bike.

Get a volt meter and check the voltage,I think I'm right in saying that if its less than 12v your battery is deceased and it may only possibly be recovered by a specialist charger if at all.

Hi - when the battery was totally flat the first time. Before jumping it , there were no sounds at all. Now it makes an audible click, click, click like something is trying to do something but obviously not doing what its supposed to.

Are you saying that you hear a single click when you press the starter button? If so then your battery did not charge up enough after you started it with the portable jump starter. The portable jumper does not charge your battery, it IS a battery that only allows you to start you bike. If you rode the bike for a longer period of time after jumping it your alternator probably would have charged the battery back up to near full charge. You need to either attach your battery to a charger until it's fully charged or jump start the bike again and take it out for a nice 1 hour cruise then see if it will start on it's own.

Try to keep all the lights off whilst you are running it, or anything else that will use electricity. The sound you hear is either the starter solenoid trying to engage but running out of juice to do that _and_ turn the starter motor or, if your battery is _realy_ flat, the relay trying to move the solenoid and doing the same thing. The batteries on Guzzis are larger than an average [8-)] motorcycle's and need much more time (charge) to recover after accidental discharge.

The clicking will be the relays/starter solenoid going on and off as there isn't enough power to turn the starter and power the solenoid.

Pressing the starter causes the solenoid to connect, the starter attempts to turn using all the battery can give (not enough)which causes the solenoid to disconnect the starter,then as the power is now available at the solenoid again it conects and so on and so on ......hence the click.... click... click ....click....

 

Charge the battery and you may get away with it, I wouldn't run the bike in this state as the task of charging the battery and running the fuel pump, coils ,lights(if you can't turn them off that is) could overwelm the already minimal charging circuit! $

If you are really stuck for a charger you could disconnect the battery and use jump leads from a car(they have their uses) to recharge it to the point where it will at least spin the bikes motor over.

The ticking is just the relays cycling. You need a better charge on your battery.

 

When you recharge your battery, it's a good idea to disconnect it from the bike (remove the (-) pole first).

Be sure to buy a motorcycle specific charger or a 12V trickle charger - no more than 2 amp.

There is no need to disconnect the battery from the bike, just be careful on your hook up.

Using your alternator to charge it up will work but if your battery is bad and your alternator is putting out full blast all the time to try & keep it charged up you will shorten the life of your alternator.

Any decent auto shop can load test that battery after it has been charged.
