Simpson Helmets

I guess it is time to replace my 10 year old AGV helmet. I nicked it up in a low side and loss the visor. It smelled funny anyhow.

Anyone ever try Simpson helmets? I'm interested but not sure about mail order and subsequent fitting issues, let alone features and noise. I like the Bandit, or Outlaw.

Don't do it without trying one on.

I tried one on (I think it was a bandit but it looked a little different than what is in their current catalog) a few years ago and it was all wrong, kind of tight around the crown, but loose down low.

Not uncomfortable, but I would expect a lot of wind noise because of the loose fit near the ears.

I also still own a Simpson from the seventies.

Solid shell that has endured numerous drops.

I use it for working a chain and other activities where crap is hitting you in the face.

if its the outlaw style you're after, try the ROOF helmets. they make you look quite sinister and fits your head at the same time (if you've got a head that also fits SHOEI-helmets and other jap-bins)

Not sure if this will help but I bought a Bandit in 2004 and really liked the fit, the looks, the fear it invoked in car drivers/passengers, etc. but after riding the downtown freeways in Houston, I just had to look for something else. Sand kept coming up around my chin (even though i have a beard) and got in my eyes. I think they might make great racing helmets, but this MC helmet was ruthless on the eyes. After trying a couple of other brands, I now have an ICON skull mainframe (http://www.rideicon.com/). It is just totally awesome. Nothing can beat the looks of some of the Simpsons, but for functionality, the ICON beats 'em.

If you are looking for some more food for thought, you might check out the article by Motorcyclist on helmets (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html). Being an engineer, a bit of a history of science buff, and wary observor of "group think" in no matter what arena (modified portfolio theory (ie, mutual funds get you average returns), over population may be a myth, don't ask about SWAG on global warming), you may find some hidden truths in the article. BTW, Simpson refused to partake in the test. Others in the forum can tell you their thoughts.

Thanks for the tips. I'm giving the Simpson a pass unless I find a dealer in the Chicago area that has them to try on.

I like the Roof Diversion looks. Plus you can get it in Orange. Maybe I'm a sissy, but I don't really care what I look like to others when I'm riding. I can't see myself (especially with stock V11 mirrors!) anyhow. My last helmet was white. Say what you will but a bright color like white, yellow, or orange is pretty noticeable. And I'll take that for all the cell-phone talking teenies and geezers in Buicks.

Think I'll try on some Shoei's if the fit is similar to Roof & take a chance on mail order.

Looks like I won't be going to the Michigan rally this weekend. Supposed to bucket down with rain Sat. & Sun.
